Even though many parents are not much aware, pinworm infections are very common especially in children. Read on to learn about some home remedies for pinworms in children.
Pinworm is an intestinal infection, one of the most common infections affecting millions of people every year. However, school going children, in the age group of 5 to 10 years, are the most affected ones.

Symptoms of Pinworm Infection

Rectal itch is the most common symptom of having pinworm infection. Although there is no such danger, the rectal itching worsens often at night. Infected children often have restless nights and their sleep get hampered.
If not treated on time, the infection can spread through vagina and your child may suffer urinary tract infection also. Following good hygiene and prescribed medication and help result in effective cure. Before opting for any medicine or even home remedy, it is advisable to contact your doctor and get it confirmed. Once it is diagnosed that your child is infected with pinworms, you can opt for treatment.

Home Remedies for Pinworms in Children

Have a quick look at the simple home remedies for dealing with pinworms in children.
*Note: Talk to you paediatrician before trying these home remedies on your child to ensure safety. If your child is allergic to any other these ingredients, avoid trying these remedies on your child.

Garlic

Garlic is a natural product that is considered excellent to get rid of pinworms. It is better to use garlic in fresh form and prefer adding them to as many food items you can. Just keep in mind that the dried form does not work well.

Coconut

Coconut is one of the most common remedies used in India. Take a spoonful of coconut in the morning and for more effect use castor oil two to three hours after taking coconut. This will help flush the pinworms out of the body.

Carrots

Let your child eat shredded carrots as many times as possible. This will help purge the worms from intestine.

Pumpkin Seeds

Children like to eat raw pumpkin seeds. You can crush the seeds and cook them in water for two hours keeping the flame low. Let it cool after straining the mixture. Now give your child one teaspoon every fifteen minutes – four times a day. After two hours, let your child eat warm oatmeal so that the worms get flushed out of the system.

Onions

Onions have sulphur in them naturally and they are excellent for getting rid of pinworms. Slice the onion and soak in a jug of water overnight. Let your child drink this water three times a day.

Clove and Flaxseeds

Take a clove and crush it to mix with flaxseeds. The appropriate ratio is 1:10. You can add this mixture to the food once daily and let your child have this for three alternate days.

Bitter Guard

Giving bitter guard juice will help flush pinworms and their eggs out of the system.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has wide range of health benefits. Mix one or two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in water and let your child drink it daily.

Change Eating Habits

Instead of giving high sugar and carbohydrate foods to your child, offer fresh fruits and vegetables. High fibre foods help add bulk to the stool and hence they get flushed out from your child’s system.

Maintaining Proper Cleanliness And Hygiene

Proper hygiene is the key for prevention of pinworms. Therefore it is very important you wash the fruits before giving them to your children. Wash them preferably with warm water. Make your kids wash their hands before every meal.
It is good to maintain good hygiene within the family and family members so that spread of the worms is prevented. Clean the toilet thoroughly after your child has used it and keep the bed sheets clean because it is extremely contagious.

Sweets are not the only reason for pinworms, keeping children hygienic is also very important.
