Helping Grandchildren with Homework

Grandparents helping with homework can be a great time for developing the bond of love. Make homework an enjoyable activity with our tips for grandparents to help kid with home work.
We come across kids who feel that homework is a punishment that is forcefully thrusted upon them. Grandparents can be the ones who can actually help the kids change this belief. They can make homework enjoyable at the same time. This can be easily done by using the time and activity in creating and developing the bond of love between them. This is the opportunity to inspire the grandchildren towards education, discipline and accountability at the same time.

You can well imagine that it can be a great idea to complete and discuss a project while sitting under the tree in your garden. That irritable math homework can be practiced and completed while you are sitting and chatting on the stairs and bath time can double up to practice the spellings.

Given below are certain tips that can help your grandchildren with their homework:

Change the Approach Towards Homework

This has been discussed a bit in the above paragraph. You just need to build a positive attitude towards this concept of homework. Help the kid understand that it is not a burden that should cause annoyance, but something that will help him with his lessons and learn better. It is all about helping them to realise. Start by telling them stories or about real life experiences on how this exercise called homework can prove to be beneficial. You can also help the child set up the mood by engaging him in some enjoyable distraction before you start with the homework, like playing some music or gardening. This will help them relax and enhance their alertness.

Build a Routine

This requires you to first set a routine. Sit together and set up this routine through discussion regarding the time, and then stick to it. Remember, homework should be fun. Both of you should engage in activities together like after the kid gets home, he should get time to snack, rest, play some music or do a bit of gardening and then sit for homework with you and then take time off to play a game. Stress on the fact that there should be proper discipline and if he requires more time to complete his homework, then he will have to curtail the time of his later activities like plays and games.

Routine also involves that you do not rush into the homework phase, rather sit a while and chat about the day and talk on lighter subjects. Do not end up making it a dreaded exercise time. Also be creative and practical on how you blend in the fun element in the homework. You can use your garden, attic or the stairs and even the lakeside but not a roadside balcony that has scope for distractions.

Be Supportive

This is very important. Your grandchildren must be able to feel relaxed in your company. They should believe that you are there for them, whenever they need your help. Kids also have their own mood swings, so you need to be calm, patient and friendly with them. You should show your support by reading the homework tasks together and then discuss what needs to be done. Take their suggestion and give your opinion, make it a participatory exercise. Work on an example together and then ask them to proceed with the task. This will enhance their confidence and also make them feel that you are there to help them, if need be. In the end remember to appreciate.
