How to avoid calories during festivals

Learn to avoid high calorie food by taking smart health measures. Find out how you can stay away from calories during festivals and celebrations.

Every festival, of any religion, is incomplete without sweets and sweets carry calories. A wide variety of fried foods consumed during festivals are full of calories too. Though festivals are loaded with joy and fun, it disturbs diet schedules of many people.
During festivals we switch off our mental calorie count alerts and freak on all those snack and goodies. It becomes very difficult to avoid high calorie content food during festivals but there is a way out. You can build a regime to avoid calories during festivals.

Avoiding calories during festivals

As the festive season approaches it is important to remember that while you enjoy every moment of celebration and think avoiding calories can be impossible, it is not so. Remember it will take away all the hard work you did to get in shape. Moderation is the key to enjoy festive food and still keep the weighing scales in balance. Read on and find out how you can avoid calories during festivals.

Use low fat and low sugar ingredients

Make use of low fat ingredients like low fat milk, low sugar products and other dairy products to make sweets and snacks. Try to make optimum use of these products. Do not use these products extensively under the halo effect of low fat. The product consisting 'low fat' does not mean that there is absolutely 'no fat' in these products.

Use a limited quantity of oil for cooking

Though fried food tastes good it is not good for health. So you should cook your food using limited quantity of oil. While you compromise on oily stuff in your daily life you can say no to it during festivals too. Most people eat oily food occasionally. In this case they tend to consume more oily stuff than they can normally consume. At the end of the day they gain nothing from avoiding oily stuff. The moral of the story is that you should eat less even when you eat oily stuff occasionally.

Drink a glass of water

When it is snack time during festivals, drink a glass of water. A glass of water will make your stomach partially full. As a result you will eat less, this will help to minimise the calorie intake. When there is a get together during festivals, you can stick to the habit of 'eat less and talk more'. While you engage yourself in talking to friends you will forget about food.

Check out the food labels

Select the food by checking the labels of calorie content and other nutrition information. You can do this for each and every product from cooking oils to snacks. Select products with minimum calorie content while buying snacks during festivals.

Record your calorie intake

Try to track the amount of calories you consumed during festive occasions. You can make adjustments to your diet later on. You can either decide in advance how much calories you will consume during a particular period or you can attend a workout session.

Find substitutes for snacks and sweets

When you serve sweets and snacks you can also add fruits and nuts to the plate. When you just cannot stop eating you can eat nuts and dry fruits instead. Even fruits and nuts have calories so do not consume them in excess but you can substitute it with snacks and sweets.

Say no to aerated drinks

Avoid serving aerated drinks, you can try water or fruit juices without sugar. Nothing can be better than water. It is only water that quenches thirst. Aerated drinks are bad for health as they are sources of calories.

Clean plate mentality

Keep your clean plate mentality aside forever as it is limited to children only. When you are invited at your friend's or relative's place for dinners during festivals, stay away from the clean plate mentality. Do not hesitate to leave some snacks thinking that the hosts would feel bad.

Serve in smaller plates

You tend to eat less when you serve your self in smaller plates. Even small spoons, glasses and bowls are beneficial to avoid unhealthy food stuff.
Running away form food will not help achieve your goal of staying away from calories. If you have improper diet habits, it can harm your health. You should always remember that a balanced diet and regular exercise are vital for a healthy life. You can also practice yoga and meditation which will help you stay physically as well mentally strong.

Nice tips to avoid calories but this will not work during festivals as relatives and friends just force feed sweets out of love. I have experienced that it is impossible to say a no to them.
