Buying a Digital Camera

Buying a Digital Camera

Digital cameras are preferred nowadays for capturing those magic moments. Read about some guidelines to consider before you purchase a camera.

In the olden days, the average family trudged along to the studio once a year to have a family photograph taken. As the years passed by, a variety of cameras were introduced in the market, which enabled people to click good photographs themselves. Each new camera was more sophisticated than its predecessor. Currently, digital cameras are the most feature-rich cameras available.
Digital cameras are more advanced than ordinary cameras. They have extra features and are easy to use. However, if you are considering buying a digital camera, the range of models available can confuse you. Here are some things to consider while making your decision.

Experience Level

Your prior experience with digital photography will play some part in your choice. If you are buying your first camera, you may not want to deal with many complicated features, so a basic point-and-shoot model might suffice. On the other hand, an experienced user may be inclined to invest in a camera where he has more control over the picture-capturing process.
The type of photographs you want to take can also be a deciding factor. For example, if you want to take pictures of your children playing, dancing, etc. you will need to look for a camera with a relatively fast shutter speed. You will also need this type of camera if you are a nature enthusiast, bird watcher, etc.

Feature List

When you buy a camera, what features are you looking for? List all the characteristics you would like your camera to have. Then, give each feature a priority. This is because you may not find a camera with the exact configuration you are looking for. In that case, you will have to choose which features you are willing to compromise on. Do not compromise on everything though. If you do this for all features, you are likely to end up with a camera that does not do even one thing to your satisfaction.

Comparisons and Reviews

Always compare different cameras when you are looking to make a decision. Comparisons can be made between similar models of different brands and different models of the same brand. This gives you an idea of the types of features available for a particular model and brand. You can then check your feature list and determine how realistic it is.
Reviews about a camera are another way to check its reliability. If you know someone with the same camera, ask him how it functions. Alternatively, you can check the information on the camera company's website. Generally, most websites will have forums or discussion boards where people can post their experiences with their own cameras.

Budget Constraints

You may be very interested in a high-end camera but it is also necessary to check if you can actually afford it. Fix a limit on how much you are willing to spend on your camera. If you want, you can designate a small amount as a reserve price, to be added to the initial budget. Alternatively, many shops will allow you to purchase a camera on a monthly payment scheme.
It is also a good idea to factor in the cost of the batteries you will need. For example, lithium batteries are rechargeable and can be used for a long period. However, they are expensive to purchase and may not be easily available if you need to replace the batteries urgently. On the other hand, standard AA batteries are cheaper and easily available but last for a shorter time. The advantage over lithium batteries is that you will probably not be restricted to a specific brand of batteries.

Buying a digital camera is a fairly expensive investment. In case, you are unable to afford a particular model, do not worry. Prices keep dropping so the same camera may cost less within a few months.

when buying a digicam, look for the pixels as more the megapixel, more the clarity of pics.

If you are thinking about buying a DSLR or a compact system camera take time to see what lenses are on offer for that model and to see how much they cost to buy.
