A Guide to iPod Accessories

A Guide to iPod Accessories

An iPod is more than just a portable media player. With the right accessories, your iPod can become extremely versatile.

The iPod can hold hours of music and video files, depending on which model you purchase. The iPod has also spawned an entire industry dedicated to making the iPod experience much better. There are many accessories that have been specially designed for this media player. Here is a little information about them.

In this article

Dock

The dock is primarily meant to keep your iPod stationary. It is a small tray-like accessory. You can place your iPod in the dock and use the adaptor to charge your iPod's battery. Generally, the dock adaptor corresponding to your iPod's model is placed inside the dock. Then the iPod fits perfectly into the adaptor wherein it is charged before use. The dock also acts as a stand. You can place your iPod in it and continue listening to music, without carrying it with you. The front of the dock has a circular infrared receiver to allow you to control the iPod remotely. This is with the help of the Apple iPod remote.
The back of the dock has a number of connecting ports. The first one is a standard Line Out port. This port allows you to connect your iPod to your television set or to a set of speakers using the proper cables. The second port is for connecting the iPod to your computer via a USB cable. The third port is for the S-Video Out. It allows you to connect your iPod to the television via an S-Video cable. The difference between this port and the first is that you can use the Line Out to connect the iPod to external speakers and the S-Video to connect it to your television at the same time.

Case

The iPod has a delicate surface. When you carry it around in your pocket or bag, it can easily be scratched. In addition, the iPod may fall down accidentally, which can cause the iPod's covering to break. To minimise the extent of damage in such a situation, it is best to place your iPod in a protective case. The casing can be made of a variety of materials such as fabric, leather, plastic, metal etc.
The fabric case is not just protective but also fashionable. It is available in a variety of colours. This allows you to customise your iPod on an almost daily basis according to your moods. The fabric cases are also the cheapest ones available.
The leather cases are more expensive but they are worth it. The toughness of the leather case ensures that your iPod remains secure. The case generally has a leather flap, which lies over the screen. The flap may have some part replaced by plastic cover to enable you to view the screen without removing your iPod from the case. Some cases are designed in such a manner that the main controls are accessible without taking the iPod out.
The hard plastic and metal cases are for heavy-duty use. These cases are designed to withstand extremely rough use. They are durable and long lasting. These cases are also waterproof so your iPod can even be used outside when it is raining.

Band

The iPod can also be used in the gym and while you are out walking. For these purposes, you cannot carry the iPod in your hand. This is where the sports-based accessories come in. There are special arm bands and wrist bands available, to which your iPod can be attached. These bands allow you easy access to your iPod while you are busy exercising. The bands are also sweat resistant and prevent sweat from falling on your iPod and staining it.

Buying an iPod is only the first step. There is immense joy in finding accessories so that you can customise your iPod, according to your likes.
