  • From birth to 3 months an infant gains 175 to 210 g per week
  • By 5 months the weight of the infant should be double
  • Till 1 year babies gain about 400 grams of weight each month
  • At the end of 1 year the weight is three times of what it was at the time of birth
  • By the end of 2 years the weight should be 4 times
  • By 3 years it should be 5 times
  • By 5 years it should be 6 times
  • By 7 years it should be 7 times the birth weight
  • By 10 years it should be 10 times

Tips to Help Your Child Gain Weight

When your child is underweight, you should make sure that most meals and snacks are nutrient rich.

Provide protein through the good and healthy sources eggs, peanut butter, other nut butter, bean soups, full-fat milk, yogurt and cheese.

Select from excellent carbohydrate choices like whole wheat bread and pasta, hot cereal and mashed potatoes.

Avocados, nuts and seeds are healthy fat sources to help your child gain weight naturally.

Calorie Rich Foods for Improving Your Child’s Weight

1. Milk

For an infant breastmilk is best till the age of 1 and after that cow’s milk should be introduced.

2. High Calorie Food

Instead of trying to help your child gain through fatty food or high calorie non-nutritious foods like ice-cream, chocolate, processed food and so on, it is advisable to give your child high calorie energy dense foods. This will avoid creating poor eating habits in children.

3. Banana

Banana is a fruit that you can start giving your infant after completing 6 months. It has rich dietary fibre, potassium, Vitamin C and is a good source of Vitamin B6. It is an energy dense fruit.

4. Fruits like Peach and Pear

These fruits have dietary fibre, Vitamin A, C and Vitamin B6. They can be given in the form of smoothies or added to the pancake.

5. Peas, Sweet Potatoes and Plain Meat

These are also good sources of high calorie energy foods which you can try and add to your child’s meal at the right time.

One of the best sources of food for weight gaining is ghee. You can provide your child the necessary amount every day. However, start with few drops and gradually take to a teaspoon daily. It is best to make homemade ghee so that it is free from any preservatives. Dry fruits are also a good source of weight gaining food. Make sure you give your child healthy options and have patience.
