Tips for Packing your Child's Tiffin Box

Child's Tiffin Box
Foods from all groups should be included in the diet of children. This fact should also be kept in mind while packing a child’s tiffin. Take a look at few tips for packing a child’s tiffin right away.

Packing a child’s Tiffin in the correct way is what most parents aspire for but few are able to reach a satisfactory conclusion. Kids are known to be extremely finicky about their Tiffin food and will reject it at the slightest provocation. As a parent you need to pack Tiffin that is nutritive, filling and yet can appeal to your kid’s taste buds. Here are some tips that will help you pack good Tiffin.

Think About the Visuals

Ensuring great visuals is a good way to make sure that the Tiffin will get eaten. Kids are very particular about many aspects which go unnoticed by adults. For example, they may not eat their biscuit if the cream filling is chipped or if the sandwich is not cut into triangles. A child judges food in totality assessing fragrance, aroma, texture and the aesthetics. Most children love colourful food so choose groups of food which look really bright like tomato and chickpea salsa and sandwiches with smiles drawn on them.

Packing Treats

Most kids are motivated to eat their Tiffin if there is a favourite treat inside like a muffin or a donut or home baked cakes. However, all these treats are very high in their sugar content and therefore should be consumed in moderation. The trick lies in using the treat as a motivator when you are packing your kids Tiffin. Say things like if you eat your whole Tiffin from Monday to Wednesday daily then on Thursday you will get a chocolate muffin in your lunchbox. Alternatively you can pack a small bite sized treat every day.

Use Innovation

Tuck in a small note saying that “mommy loves you” inside the lunchbox. Not only will your kid will be happy, there is a greater chance of him or her eating lunch properly. Use items like cookie cutters to make different shapes of flat breads, oat meal cookies and sandwiches etc as these are sure to grab your kid’s attention. Your picky eater kid is sure to eat the differently shaped food out of curiosity. Packing Tiffin for your kid every day is not a mean task and you really have to be innovative in order to ensure that your kid eats his or her Tiffin regularly.

Ask Your Kid

It is not recommended that you follow your kid’s instructions on what to pack in the Tiffin as your kids have zero idea about what and what not is good for them. However, giving them options to choose their lunch definitely helps as they feel that their opinions are being taken into consideration. Give them a choice like do you want to have noodles or sandwiches in your box today? Or ask them would you like to eat strawberries or melons at Tiffin time?

Include Fruits and Veggies

Your growing kid needs to have at least 5 portions of fruits and vegetables per day. For balanced nutritive Tiffin you need to include at last one portion of fruit and one portion of vegetables in the Tiffin. Steer away from fruits like cut apples and bananas that darken with air exposure as they tend to look unappetizing. If you are a vegetarian then sprouts and hummus are good protein options for Tiffin food. Make sure food groups are placed separately in different container portions of the Tiffin box. Kids love to pick their food and eat and an organized compartmentalized Tiffin would appeal to them more.
Learning to pack perfect Tiffin for your kid is an art that you will slowly master with time through a gradual process of trial and error. Make sure you start practicing this art from today.
