Fluctuations in Blood Pressure during Pregnancy

Fluctuations in Blood Pressure during Pregnancy

High blood pressure is common phenomena amongst expectant mothers. Although, the implications of the high blood pressure rarely pass on to the child as most mothers give birth to healthy babies, the issue can cause serious issues. Complications during pregnancy are inevitable if a woman suffers from chronic high blood pressure before conception.

High blood pressure in pregnant mothers can give rise complications that include premature birth, low birth weight and problems in the mother’s kidneys. Some severe cases can come with preeclampsia. This condition can be threatening for both the unborn child and the mother.

Understanding Blood Pressure

For a layman’s explanation, our blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day, with it being low during our resting period. After we finish exercising, our BP increases. The blood pressure has two readings. When the heart contracts, the pressure in the arteries is called systolic pressure and the pressure in the arteries when the heart does not contract is diastolic pressure.

Below, we shall discuss the various conditions associated with the fluctuations in blood pressure.

The Condition of Consistent High Blood Pressure

Chronic Hypertension is used to define the condition in which the mother has high blood pressure consistently. This issue can lead to heart failure, stroke, and can also be threatening for the unborn child. Medications during pregnancy for chronic hypertension must be taken as prescribed by the doctor. The effect of medicines is different during pregnancy and hence care must be taken.

The Condition during the Second Half of the Pregnancy

Gestational Hypertension is usually witnessed during the second half of the pregnancy period. However, after the birth of the child, the gestational hypertension is reduced to normal. Women, all over the world, are encouraged to undergo periodic checks for this condition during and after the pregnancy period. Meticulous analysis of the blood pressure is recommended as this condition can sometimes lead to Preeclampsia.

The Grave Issue of Preeclampsia

The condition can be witnessed in pregnant woman around the 20th week, but usually appears during the 33rd week. The origins of this problem have been linked to the inflammatory processes in a woman’s bloodstream. Also, poor diet, damage to the blood vessels, and a weak immune system are supposed causes of Preeclampsia. It is important to understand and cure this condition. If left uncured, it can lead to seizures and also cause the expectant mother to be in coma.

Treating High Blood Pressure during Pregnancy

The organic way of reducing the blood pressure is through rest. It is advisable for pregnant woman not to exert much as it may cause additional issues. In cases when the blood pressure appears to be more threatening, doctors can advise for inducing labour. The choice between inducing labour and pregnancy with blood pressure should be left to the expertise of a doctor. Women should consult doctors during the early stages of their pregnancy in order to monitor their blood pressure, urine, and other important elements of their body for a healthy pregnancy.

Complications during Pregnancy due to Blood Pressure

High blood pressure can bring various complications during the pregnancy period which can lead to problems during conception. These include the risk of heart failure, kidney failure, seizures, and in some extreme cases, even coma.

For obvious reasons, no one wants their wives, sisters or daughters to undergo such pain during their pregnancy. It is therefore advised to take proper medications and rest to contain the blood pressure within the limits. If one is experiencing irregular periods of blood pressure, they should not hesitate in going to the doctor.

Please note that high blood pressure treatment is not only recommended for pregnant women, but for everyone. Blood pressure, in women especially, if not controlled at an early age can impact their entire lives. Therefore, the understanding of blood pressure and its effects is necessary for a healthy living.
