Fertility drugs are administered to women with ovulation disorders to aid in successful conception. They are a major part in IVF treatment. Read on to know about common fertility drugs.

Women with ovulation disorders are mostly treated with fertility drugs at the onset. Some of the fertility drugs are orally administered while some are injected. Both act on the body by triggering of the release of hormones that in turn commence the ovulation process or controls it according to the necessity. Even in IVF treatment, fertility drugs do form a part of the entire process of treatment. Given below is some information on certain fertility drugs that are usually prescribed:

Clomid and Serophene

This belongs to the family of Clomiphene Citrate. It works on the body by making the system believe that estrogen is not of the desired level and thereby the body feels stimulated to enhance the FSH or follicle stimulating hormone and LH or the luteinizing hormone. For successful conception to take place, these are basically the two hormones that are necessary. The FSH causes the follicles in your ovaries to ripen and LH releases the eggs.

Probable Side Effects: There can be a series of side effects like nausea, vomiting, mood swings, irritability, feeling of tenderness in the breasts, hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Clomiphene can cause multiple pregnancies in 4-10% of women, mostly twins and 1% of them can get pregnant with triplets. Experience of headache or visual disturbance should be immediately reported to your doctor.

Follistim or Gonal-F

This is a follicle stimulating hormone which is basically the synthetic version of the natural FSH and they cause the eggs to mature. Apart from inducing ovulation, the drug also stimulates the development of multiple eggs for a successful IVF.

Probable Side Effects: Headache, muscle ache, mood swings bordering on high irritability along with feelings of tenderness of breasts are the common side effects. There can also be OHSS or ovarian hyper stimulation which results in the enlargement of the ovaries. These symptoms are noticed within 7-10 days of the commencement of treatment and almost 5-10% of the women get affected by one or more of these symptoms. Other symptoms include bloating, vomiting, diarrhoea, pelvic pain, urinary problems, swelling in the hands and legs, shortness of breath and in acute cases, even kidney dysfunction and blood clots in the system.

This is Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist. This drug is injected to trigger off and enhanced production of the LH and FSH. This is particularly in cases where the ovulation must be regulated for other treatments or when chemotherapy is also administered to the patient. It temporarily shuts down the pituitary gland, thereby stopping ovulation.

Probable Side Effects: Symptoms of a temporary menopause are exhibited if the drug is not coupled with some ovulation stimulating treatment. The common side effects noticed are headache, insomnia, hot flashes and vaginal dryness.

Hep-Lock or Liquamin

This heparin drug is injected to lower the risk of miscarriage in women who suffer from blood-clotting disorders that are actually associated with recurrent pregnancy mishaps.

Probable Side Effects: There can be back and stomach pain, hair fall and appearance of rashes on the skin along with heavy bleeding and high levels of potassium in the blood is also recorded.

Pergonal, Repronex and Menopur

These are all human menopausal gonadotropin that are a combination of LH and FSH and are injected either to trigger of ovulation in women who have irregular ovulation or have altogether stopped ovulating. The side effects are still under observation at this stage.

Pregnyl, Profasi and Novarel

These stimulate the maturation of the eggs and get them released from the follicle by administering the hCG hormone in the system.

Probable Side Effects: There can be swelling and pain at the site where the injection is pushed along with nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain and OHSS.Most of the fertility drugs work by releasing or controlling the LH and FSH that deal with the release of immature follicles and eggs. The women thus are helped with successful pregnancies and most fertility drugs are also administered as a part of the IVF treatment or solo.
