Feng Shui for Your Bedroom

Feng Shui for Your Bedroom

Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of placement. Learn how to arrange your bedroom furniture to keep your 'chi' in balance.

The primary goal of Feng Shui is to arrange objects in your daily surroundings so that none of them affects your 'chi' or life force. It also aims to create a harmonious environment, to welcome health and good fortune. At the same time, it seeks to keep away sorrow and bad omens.
Feng Shui in your bedroom revolves around creating a connection filled with positive energy, between your spouse and yourself. It also determines the best possible arrangement of objects in the bedroom to give you uninterrupted rest when you need it. In short, Feng Shui helps to turn your bedroom into your own personal sanctuary.

The Colour Scheme

Feng Shui encourages the use of inviting colours, which can help to calm the mind. Psychiatrists too agree that the colour of a room does have an impact on the psyche of an individual. In general, dark-coloured walls tend to make a room look smaller and stifle the mind. On the other hand, light-coloured rooms look larger and more inviting.
In Feng Shui, practitioners encourage painting the walls of your bedroom with welcoming colours. The colour selection depends on the ambience you wish to create in the room. Earth-based colours such as copper, cream, peach, terra cotta, tan, etc. are all warm shades and serve to make your room appear cosy. Cooler colours such as light shades of blue, green, and lavender have a calming effect and increase the healing energy present in a room.
Pinks and reds are normally associated with romance and are believed to enhance the bond of love between couples. However, these shades should be restricted to the accessories in your bedroom such as sheets, pillows, etc. Avoid colours like bright red and orange as these represent stimulation.

The Position of Your Bed

According to Feng Shui, your bed should be as far away from the door as possible. However, it should still allow you to be able to observe the entrance. This is meant to make you feel safe and protect you from harm while you are at rest. The best place to position your bed is exactly diagonally across the door of your bedroom. A bed with a solid wooden headboard is a good investment, as it provides additional support and strength to your head.
There are other concerns relating to the position of the bed. Ensure that your bed does not have a footboard. This is to avoid any obstacles to your progress in life. Also, do not place your bed underneath a window. Windows are not considered as solid as walls. Moreover, a window is an entry and exit point for energy, which leads to restless sleep.
Avoid placing your bed underneath a ceiling fan or a heavy beam. These objects are said to contain negative energy that smothers you while you sleep. If you have no other option, suspend a canopy over your bed. This will prevent the negative energy from pressing down on you.
Another major issue is to make sure that your feet do not point towards the door when you are in bed. This is the traditional Chinese 'death position'. This is because in China, a dead body is carried out of the room, feet first. Feng Shui experts believe that if you sleep this way, it will drain away your life force. In case this position is unavoidable, place a cushion or some other object between your feet and the door. This will act as a buffer zone.
Cut out the clutter on your bed or you will prevent energy from flowing freely around it. Finally, position the bed so that it is easy for both you and your spouse to get up and move around with ease.
You spend almost a third of every day in your bedroom. Therefore, it is essential that your bedroom be filled with positive vibes to ensure that you remain happy and well rested.
