Effects of Diabetes on Children

Breaking the news of diabetes to children in a self restrained manner helps in preventing any behavioural issues in the future. Talking about diabetes with the children helps in treating diabetes as then the child is well prepared mentally. Diabetes can have an emotional effect on the children. Read on to0 know about the effect of diabetes in children.

Children have a strange reaction to diabetes and it all depends on how the parents place the fact to them. According to behavioral experts it is easy for the child as well as for the parent to maintain the kid’s health if they talk to the child about the disease rather than keeping it as a secret from him.

It has been found that if the parent reacts with shock and horror once they get the news in front of their children, the child is likely to take it as the worst possible thing to happen to him and will gradually sink into depression apart from developing a series of behavioral problems.

It is therefore important that the kid receives the support of the entire family and not end up comprehending it as a terrifying disease. If the child happens to have a wrong comprehension, there can be a series of impacts that are far from positive. Some of them are like:

Effects of Diabetes on Child’s Psychology

Diabetes can leave an impact on child’s mind as well. However, with support of parents, child can cope with it easily. Read on to find more about the impact of diabetes on child.

Discuss and Share your Agonies in the Absence of your Kid

As said earlier, it is important that your child does not get a feeling that his parents are extremely worried about his condition. He will then infer that he has developed a dreaded disease and there is no looking back from there. He will be perennially traumatized about his condition and start to believe that life will never be happy for him. Kids can never take it if they find their parents petrified.

So parents need to exercise self-restraint despite the fact that it is natural for them to feel worried about their kid’s health. Once they are in control over themselves, they will be control the situation as well.

Inform the Child

One the child gets to know that he has got diabetes, and sees a change in his regular life in respect to his diet and lifestyle routines, he gets confused. As a child, he knows practically nothing on what the disease is all about. It has been seen in several cases that it quite beneficial for the child in understanding and dealing with the condition if he is well informed.

The responsibility to explain the condition and the disease along with the possible outcomes of it lies on the parents. This will help the child to take the changes in good spirit and realise that all these will help him in the long and there is nothing to feel dejected about.

Dealing With a Irritable and Disturbed Child

Diabetes can make a child irritable and annoyed as he is not allowed to have his favourite chocolates or fries. A child is emotionally very vulnerable. He might tend to feel that it is perhaps out of personal grudge that his parents are not letting his have food that he likes so much.

This situation can escalate to serious behavioral issues that have the potential to escalate into serious issues in later life. It is here that the parents need to explain the condition to the child in clear terms and state the basic facts. There is no point to be rude but it is essential that you make sure the child understands what might occur to him if he does not follow the diet discipline.

The Child Feels Being Constantly Monitored

When the parents are so concerned about the well being of the child, and keeps an eye on his diet and regular activities, and always talking about his medical checkups, there is a possibility that the child feels that he is of no use as his parents feel the need to constantly monitor him. This can lead to a loss of self esteem and is definitely not required for his social and psychological development. So the parents need to be of course protective and not pushy. Explain the facts to the child and let the kid grow up in his own space. Do not hover like a hawk and try to trust his abilities and understanding powers. Allow him to face the situation, support him to deal with it and learn to live with it.
