Development of Fine Motor Skills in the second year

Development of Fine Motor Skills in the second year

Your baby will undergo a lot of developments in her second year of growth and development. Read on to learn when your baby will advance from holding objects to twisting knobs.

13 to 15 Months

The baby will be able to raise herself, walk with feet wide apart and elbows high. By this time she will not only master her walking skills but also learn to run. If your child is still unable to walk, you must take her to a paediatrician so that right measures can be taken. You will also mark an improvement in other skills like self-feeding etc.
You must keep a scribbling pad and crayons ready as you will have great fun watching her scribble with different colours. But make sure that you supervise her and she does not put crayons in her mouth. You also need to be very careful about the objects and other things around her as she will be skilful enough to even pickup small particles. You can also get toys like building blocks for her as she can spend a good amount of time building her tower.
You can play a very important role during this phase. Be there for her every little achievement. Boost her development by getting involved in her play and learning, talking to her, telling her stories, reading to her and so on.

18 to 20 Months

Your child is now almost one and a half year old by now. She will be able to walk in a steadier manner and her arms will drop to her sides. She will also develop the ability to climb stairs. She will also learn to hop and jump. She will even make use of tables and stools in order to get something which is kept at a higher level. She will be completely aware of the objects in her surroundings and she will also try to experiment with them. So, it is a must for you to supervise her.
This is the time when you must encourage the development of her listening skills and the interest in books. Telling her more and more stories and reading to her will surely spark an interest for reading and books in her.

21 to 24 Months

At this stage, the baby can maintain her balance and can retrieve dropped objects. She will also master the skill of kicking the ball. At times even you will get tired of playing football with her but she may not. By this time she will also learn to recognise and differentiate between her toys. You can get picture books, alphabet and number books for her. Help her recognise all the pictures in the book and by some time you will be surprised to see how quickly she recognises the pictures in the book by herself.
By the time your child turns 2, you will not only find improvement in her motor skills, but also in her speaking skills. She will start putting two words together and ask you simple question. You as a parent can play a very important role in her growth and development. This is the only time when the development is at its peak. Therefore, make sure that you do your best as a parent.
