Tips for Helping Children Cope with Fever

Tips for Helping Children Cope with Fever
It is necessary to take right precautionary measures to help a child recover faster from fever. Take a look at what you can do to help your child cope with fever.
“Children are the masters of the next generation” – for their complete development in both the physical and mental aspects of life, it is necessary that proper and adequate nutrition and hydration should be offered to them. However, due to the amount of stress and consumption of fast food today’s children are exposed to, their immunity level is currently at risk.
Young children are more susceptible to fever due to weather conditions, infections, allergic reactions or flu. However, fevers are nothing to be really scared of, though it might be scary for parents to see their child with a temperature, sore body and cold. Apart from extra care towards a wholesome diet and water, here are some remedies to help your child cope with fever.

1. Give the Child a Lukewarm Bath or a Sponge Bath

A warm bath is helpful for the childhood to cool her body and bring her temperature down. Cold water should not be used for this as it may make her shiver and cause her body temperature to rise. Make sure that the water does not get cold. Similarly, rubbing alcohol or ice should not be used for this as this may cause a temperature spike. A cool washcloth on her forehead while she is resting could also work to cool her down.

2. Give Her More Liquids

Fever comes with dehydration as the body uses up strength to fight illness. Even if your child is resting or watching TV, encourage her to drink plenty of water, homemade juices, and clear soups to compensate for the loss of water. If the child refuses to drink, you can also give her oral rehydration solution to sip-on to prevent dehydration and cool down her body.

3. Dress Your Child Lightly and Make Her Comfortable

In contrary to suffocating her in heavy clothes make the room cool and comfortable with windows open to let in air. Dress the child in normal clothes and throw on a light jacket only if she is feeling cold. Make her use a light blanket and keep the fan on at a low speed. The reason for this is to lower her body temperature instead of increasing it further. Try to make the atmosphere at home cheerful and cozy so that it can help her to recover faster.

4. Hygiene Should Be Maintained

If your child does not seem to have a particular reason as to why she is sick, take a good look around the room and your house. Clean up any dust and dirt which might be lurking around the corners. Wash the bedsheets and blankets so that the child does not catch any infection from her own blankets. Be sure to keep your hands clean when you feed or touch her. Make sure that everything she’s using has also been sanitized to avoid contamination.

5. Use Natural Remedies to Reduce Fever

Instead of giving your child harmful pills, you can try some of these wonderful Ayurvedic remedies to ease her discomfort. One of the favourite ingredients is honey which helps in soothing discomfort. Carom seeds boiled with tulsi leaves can help relieve cough and chest congestion. Onions can also be used for treatment grinding it and giving your child its juice to drink.
Though minor fevers are generally harmless, it is advisable to take your child to a doctor if she is under three months, or if fever does not subside within a day. Such fever might be accompanied by high temperature, severe body pain or allergies. Your pediatrician will prescribe certain medicines that will soon cure her of fever and any underlying factor without any risks.
