Body Changes

In the fifth month of pregnancy, you may experience the rapid growth of your nails and hair. You may also experience the growth in your feet. Read more about the body changes that take place during the fifth month of pregnancy.

It seems like my feet are growing. Is it my imagination

No. It is the fluid retention in your body that causes feet and hands to swell. Due to hormonal changes, all the joints in your body are getting relaxed, including your feet. After delivery, even though they return to normal, there is a chance that you might need a size larger. Orthotic shoes, or shoes designed to correct your distorted center of gravity are now available. Elasticised slippers are also known to help.

Why are my hair and nails growing so fast

Pregnancy causes an increase in your metabolic rate, which in turn nourishes your skin cells, making your hair and nails grow faster. Hair could also start appearing on the arms, legs, back, belly and face. Most of the hair disappears within 6 months after delivery. So there is little cause for worry.

Dark spots have appeared on my face

You could suffer from many strange skin symptoms due to pregnancy. Some women are known to develop a dark line down the center of the abdomen and the skin of a dark woman sometimes get discolored in the course of these nine months. After which, it returns to normal. Folic acid deficiency is one of the main causes of excessive pigmentation. So make sure you are having your vitamin supplements regularly and eating greens, fruits and vegetables. Keep out of the sun, or apply a sunscreen.
