Vision and Dental Problems during Pregnancy

Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy may lead to vision problems and dental problems during pregnancy. Find out ways to prevent vision and dental problems in pregnancy.

There seems to be something wrong with my vision.

Blurring, Dimming or Spots Before Eyes

Are you experiencing blurring, dimming or spots before your eyes? Then consult your doctor immediately, because this is not normal. But if your vision has just lost its sharpness and acuity or your hard lenses do not seem to fit anymore, just relax. It is all a part of your hormones at work. It is only temporarily caused by the fluid retention so common in pregnant women. You could consider switching over to soft lenses or glasses for the interim. Expecting mothers often experience vision problems during pregnancy. During pregnancy, metabolism increases as much as 25%. Higher metabolism rate along with increased blood circulation and hormonal changes can cause eyesight problems during pregnancy.

Dryness in Eyes, Puffy or Swollen Eyelids

Dryness in the eye is experienced by many women during pregnancy. This condition usually stops and goes away soon after delivery. Dry eye syndrome can occur due to changes in hormonal levels during pregnancy. Hormonal fluctuations can also affect spectacles or contact lens prescriptions.

Puffy or swollen eyelids are also another common symptom occurring during pregnancy. Vision disturbances and vision problems are faced by some women throughout pregnancy. Dryness, irritation in eyes and other changes can occur during pregnancy.

In most cases, vision problems experienced during pregnancy go away soon after the baby is born. However, women should talk to their doctor if they are facing any eye troubles or vision problems especially if the problem lasts for more than two hours without subsiding. It is highly advised that women see an eye doctor if they are facing any eye problems during pregnancy before the problem becomes more serious or complicated.

I'm usually very particular about dental hygiene and now my gums have started to bleed.

Bleeding Gums during Pregnancy

During pregnancy, gums get inflamed, swollen and tend to bleed easily, because of the overactive hormones. (Just as it happens to the mucous membranes of the nose, causing stuffiness and nose bleeds). If you do have a cavity, attend to it immediately, because if you get infected, it would be more of a risk to the foetus, than having a cavity filled. Of course special precautions must always be taken. Local anaesthesia is known to be safe, but avoid x-rays of any kind at all costs.

Other Dental Problems

Dental problems are faced by many women during pregnancy. Dental problems such as bleeding, infection or inflammation of gums are more likely to occur during pregnancy. Along with hormonal changes, increased blood circulations to various parts of your body during pregnancy are other common reasons for changes in condition of gums and teeth. Proper hygiene and cleaning of teeth is important.

Preventing Dental Problems

By practicing a good dental hygiene during pregnancy, it is possible to prevent dental problems during pregnancy and ensure healthy teeth for a longer time. Get regular dental care and be gentle with your gums and teeth. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles for brushing. Tooth decay can cause infection which could be harmful for you and your baby. To reduce the risk of tooth decay, try to snack on low sugar foods and maintain proper oral hygiene. If you are facing any dental problems, do not put off your visit to the dentist or wait until delivery. It has been seen that gum problems and gum infection can cause premature births. Consult your dentist and get it treated.

Appropriate dental treatment and prevention can lower the risk of premature births by more than 80%. To maintain a good dental care during pregnancy; you should have healthy and nutritious diet and floss regularly. Rinsing with an antimicrobial mouthwash helps prevent gingivitis.
