Diet Food / Low Calorie Cooking:Urad dal powder

Hello,

I am staying in US. I purchased a blender and ground soaked urad dal in it. But the blender's gasket got burnt. So I purchased another one and the same thing happened. I dont want to purchase another blender or get another from india. Instead I want to know if I can get urad dal powder available just like rice powder is available, so that I can make idli or dosas ? I feel here the blenders are useful for making juices or smoothies only ? Or please suggest a good blender and what speed also. I bought a sunbeam and later osterizer with less speed. Should i buy a blender with higher speed.

i agree with whatever anu has said. i 2 use the hamilton beach one. while grinding urad dal, air bubbles get stuck up in between and it keeps on rotating without any grinding being done. And then the machine gets hot and burns. So stop when the machine feels hot and put some water or simply stir with a spoon. Hope this helps.

Your best bet is to get a food processor. Food processors do a great job when it comes to grinding dals. And yes, you do get urad dal flours in Indian stores. All Indian stores also have Idli Rava.

Hi

You do get Urad dal powder in Indian stores. You can make Dosas using this powder but I'm not sure about idly.
I have got a new blender (Osterizer 10 speed)which grinds Urad dal, rice, almost every thing but with a little more water than usual.
My suggestion to you would be, grind in smaller quantities.Just blend it at a lower speed for few rounds and then increase the speed.Add few spoons of water in between.

I lived in the US for a couple of years and am currently living in London as my husband is posted here for a few years. You do get Urid dal powder in the Indian stores all over the states...in fact I tried making dosas with it and they turned out great. The proportion I use is 3 portions rice powder to 1 portion urid dal powder and a pinch of yeast mixed and soaked overnight. Perfect to make in the morning....my in-laws call them rice-pancakes :)
