What common mistakes do parents make?
Malti replied. I was peacefully having lunch with my mom, at a wedding. An aunty soon joined us with her daughter.
Aunty : ?So are you the one in DU??
Me : ?Yes, aunty.?
Aunty : ?Nice! She (pointing towards her daughter) also wanted to get into DU. But the cutoffs for B.Com were very high last year.?
Me : ?The cutoffs for B.Com, English, and Economics are generally high, because they are the most demanded courses.?
Aunty : ?But this year, the cutoff for B.Com has dropped. She could have got a college this year.?
Me : ?Oh! I haven't checked them yet.?
Aunty : ?But you know, I would have never sent her to DU. Delhi isn't safe! Also, XYZ college (the college her daughter studied in) is better than DU. She lives close to us as well. So, everything is good.?
I would have loved to have a conversation with her daughter, to know what she actually felt. But that girl concentrated on her plate, with a smile on her face, knowing that her mother would cover up for her. So, I decided that it would be better to end the conversation, right there.
Having the support of your parents is great. But having them defending you every time as they try to cover up for your mistakes isn't. The girl sat with a smile on her face, because she knew, her mother would speak up for her, and she need not do anything.

Defending their children, always.
Not giving them a chance to speak, even if it's about their life.
Edit 1 - Getting into DU requires efforts and as much as I know them, the sole reason she didn't get through was because she hadn't put the required efforts. However, her mother ?covered up' for it by giving excuses such as cutoffs were high, Delhi isn't safe, she is close to home etc. She also told me how XYZ college is better than DU.
My point is that the daughter could have spoken up for herself without her mother being her aid.
