Bowel and Bladder Movements:Hi Hetal!

Hi Hetal,
Thanks a lot for replying to my post.
Further, the doc suggested us to give him Zincovit(not Zincovit-C),shelcal and bonisan.
After reading your reply, we felt that we need to give our son a chance to grow naturally. My son did not show any lag in growth or achieving milestones. His APGAR score was 9 and he has been achieving milestones fairly well till date. He turned onto his tummy when he was exactly 3 months old.. Now, he reaches for objects and tries to keep in his mouth. Can sit well with support. Tries to lean forward when made to sleep on lap. He can turn on his tummy and sometimes turn to his back. Though he has not mastered this turning back and forth yet, he rolls easily sometimes in sleep or otherwise. also, he likes to sleep on his tummy.
He was not detected with osteoporosis/less bone density or anything such.In fact no tests related to this were done.

I hv few queries now:
1)He has been passing stools for 7-8 times only since a week now. We have been giving nutrolin-B for 4 days now. Though his stools are normal in consistency, the frequency is still around 5-6 times. Is this a cause of worry? We have stopped zincovit, shelcal, bonisan, iron drops. All we give him now is formula,bm,rice/ragi for one time.
Its been 2 days since we started this and I think we need to give him some more time to get back to passing stools for 1-2 times. Earlier, even with all the supplements and feeds(rice for 2-3 times in a day), he used to pass stools 1-2 times. Its since a week that he has been passing stools for 7-8 times. Thats why we are worried. Now with nutrolin-B and electral we hope that this gets bk to normal.
2)He sweats a lot when ever he drinks bm or formula. Is this normal?
3)What are the other things we need to look for to ensure that he is growing normally?
4)he moves his legs(like cycling)very rapidly when made to lie down. He has been doing this since he was about 2.5 months. Whenever he used to do this his head used to get hot and feet/hands cold. Now,his head doesnt get that hot often but his feet/hands do get cold sometimes.
5)Also, he sleeps only for about 8-9 hours (wakes up in 3 hrs intervals) in night. He does not sleep in afternoons. Can we do anything about this?Though he sleeps during the day, its only for about 40 mins or less. Very rarely(may be once in a month or so) he sleeps for about 1.5-3 hrs during the day.
Pl. suggest.once again thanks a lot for replying

about apgar score,,a perfect 10 is considered as a perfectly healthy babies but at the same time keep in mind that a slightly low apgar score(like in your case 9) is perfectly normal in newborns esp those when born with csection, high risk pregnancies, or complicated and a very long labour...if your dr was concerned about apgar score,,he would have explained you well about this,,and by now your baby must have shown those defects,,,which IS NOT THE CASE..
your baby at 6months, is doing wonderful,,his development seems to be fine with me...start making him sit with support, see how he reacts,,also things like rockers often helps to motivate baby to sit, supported and then once they are ready they start sitting unsupported..dont rush though, give him time...

1.there is no worry about his stools.he was given nutrolin-b, for stomach infection and he seems to be getting better,,call your dr and ask how long does he think you should give this medicine...its been 4 days, i guess he should expect you to take upto total 10days(means another 6 days),,but please ask him if its needed.at 5-6months, he is still passing around 5-6times, which means he still has not recovered completely..
however, this is not the sign of worry, as long as your baby is not feeling tired after passing these many bowels.and since he is comfortable sleeping on tummy, motivate him to crawl..
as far as solids are concerned, start her with one time fruit(apple, banana) or one vegetable (carrots or green peas ),
go slow and right now best to introduce is mashed fully riped(not overriped) banana.. like you said, apple makes him pass more bowels,,so give first banana and then again start him with boiled apple..

he will get normal and keep a track with your dr as well..like i said ask your dr about nutrolin-b dosage.if your baby comes upto 3-4times as well,m not worried,,,
2.sweating is pretty normal during breastfeeding,,its because of body heat and some babies feel excited when drinking bm or formula, either because they are badly hungry, very happy and some sweat because of anxiety and want to finish up at faster rate so they get excited to do that...,,.no worries.
while feeding,,if his fist are closed, release them,,hold his fingers,,give him a light rub on his legs and hands,,he will feel relaxed...

3.to ensure that he is growing good/perfectly normal, since he is already on tummy and rolls abit and tries to lean forward,,i expect him to grow at same rate and expect him to crawl by next month, and start sitting as well..other things to keep in mind is weight, height. check his weigth weekly,,ne sign of decrease in numbers,,ask your dr..
once he settles nicely with his bowels, start offering her variety of solids...great ideas on start healthy at gerber dot com.

4.its normal for babies to do cycling,,its good, some babies dont do that all,,drs tell parents to cycle their legs..your baby has a good motion,,,convert it to positive growth,,keep your baby in baby gym for a while,,he will get a good exercise by hitting and kicking the gym toys,,he will be able to make use of all this energy and cycling...or hang something over his legs,,like a toy or so,,put in way that touches his feet,,let him kick it,,and get his legs in coordination with his eyes and give something in hands to play...

with the same growth rate i expect him to start crawling soon....however if this is the effect of his supplemts only then his growth may be accelerated growth and not a normal growth ! its perfectly fine no worries...
babies feet and hands often get cold upto 9months,,thats why making them wear socks will provide them enough warm..whenver they get too cold,,just rub abit and give them warm..give something in hand so that he feels comfortable with it..its normal..

5.about sleep, at 6months, i expect a lively but healthy baby to sleep around range of min 12-16 hours in a day,,considering a good night sleep at 8-9hours,,never mind until 6-7months if your baby wakes up frequently for feeds,,,,,some babies do that..give your baby a good bath before sleep,,see if he feels good with it and sleeps well.
other reasons of waking up is he is ready for solids and other reason could be overstimulation,,like you said he moves his legs rapidly cycling,,give his legs a good massage he will like it,,it will relax him...about sleeping hours, nothing much we can do,,put on some good music, rock him,,and see if that works,,some babies sleep less,,there is nothing to worry about, as far as they are not looking tired,,keep them cozy with clothing and proper covering,,give them good exercise, playtime,,i expect your baby to get in a good schedule once you start him with solids...
finally its not necessary for babies to keep on growing by height,,imagine what would be the total height if it keeps on increasing,,but at your next wel child check up, i expect him to grow atleast a bit,,not more,
baby height has alot to do with gift from family so his height will grow accordingly,,
about zincovit, give only if your dr has felt the need of it,,ask your dr,,specifically whether or not your baby needs it or not.

if his hb was low then giving iron drops is better option than giving zincovit...or together,,but these two are more than enough for this young infant...not more...
ask your dr like i said \" does my baby need these\" .

so this is all i see..hope everything is cleared and he gets well soon,,would love to hear his updates..
take care,

RE:Baby cries while passing urine - Hetal pls advice
At the same time the child is feeling some pain So try to understand and consult a doctor.... - sharmasanvi [View Message]
RE:bowel movement in 2 week old infant
Some babies go through phases when they either can't use the muscles to empty their bowels or they "forget how to". In that case, it's safest keep using the suppositories daily to make them do a dirty in 5 minutes.... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:where can I get laxative?
You can get either glycerin or bisacodyl suppositories in any Indian pharmacy - I recommend saving money by not buying child-size ones, instead cutting adult supps in half to make a child-size dosage.
(I have a daughter with long-term bowel issues: she can't "do" without them!)... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:constipation
When the baby is in discomfort from constipation (especially if she hasn't done some dirty for two days or more), the first thing you should give is a glycerin suppository.... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:hi
Most doctors say banana doesn't help - the potassium in it makes constipation worse. Remember you can make your own prune puree in a blender. Grape, grapefruit and papaya are also laxative fruits. And remember you can safely use baby suppositories as often as you need to (they also help with "training" the baby to do a dirty at the same time every day)... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:Baby Movements/Development
Consult a good doctor immediately as this should not be ignored as it will cause a big issue if you let it go now, please seek doctors advice on immediate basis.... - Aditi [View Message]
RE:Baby Movements/Development
Hi Karthik this is a serious issue and you should look into this matter very seriously as its concern with your own child and you cannot let things go, have a good consulting done by a good doctor.... - Amaira [View Message]
