Bowel and Bladder Movements:bowel movement in 2 week old infant

Name: Shakela

My daughter is 18 days old and is lactose intolerant, she is currently drinking similac isomil. She was on similac lactose free in the hospital and was having normal bowel movements. When we brought her home she had one more bowel movement and then stopped having them. We put some kyro syrup in her milk and she has a small bowel movement but it was hard. She went 2 or 3 more days without a bowel movement and the doctor told us we could give her glycerin suppositories. We started to give her those to make her go but her poop was still kinda hard so we changed her milk to isomil because we thought that the similac lactose free was constipating her. Now her poop is soft and formed and she tries to push it out but she can' t pass it on her own unless given a suppository after 2 or 3 days. I dont understand why she can' t push it out on her own. This does not sound normal although the doctor says that it is and that we can give her a suppository every day if needed. I am open to any advice or help that anyone may have. I am really worried about this and don' t know what to do.

Some babies go through phases when they either can't use the muscles to empty their bowels or they "forget how to". In that case, it's safest keep using the suppositories daily to make them do a dirty in 5 minutes.

Hi,

It is the brand that may be a concern. Please change the brand in consultation with your doctor. Giving a suppository initially is fine since the baby is small and does not have the strength. I am sure your doctor is hoping that once she gains strength the suppository will be eliminated. So, don' t worry, have faith in the doc. Ask him if a change of brand might help. Sometimes children that small do not pass regular stool. My nephew would defecate once in two days until he was quite grown. So it' s ok. As long as the child does not cry when it is passing the stool.

Hi Shakela ,

Incase u BF ur baby ,tr to include more fibre in ur diet like, papaya, mango, salad, etc.

Is she really uncomfortable ..bcoz its normal as long as she is passing gas and burping as per my doc.My son used to do potty once in 7 days and docs still considered it normal.

RE:where can I get laxative?
You can get either glycerin or bisacodyl suppositories in any Indian pharmacy - I recommend saving money by not buying child-size ones, instead cutting adult supps in half to make a child-size dosage.
(I have a daughter with long-term bowel issues: she can't "do" without them!)... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:constipation
When the baby is in discomfort from constipation (especially if she hasn't done some dirty for two days or more), the first thing you should give is a glycerin suppository.... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:hi
Most doctors say banana doesn't help - the potassium in it makes constipation worse. Remember you can make your own prune puree in a blender. Grape, grapefruit and papaya are also laxative fruits. And remember you can safely use baby suppositories as often as you need to (they also help with "training" the baby to do a dirty at the same time every day)... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:Baby Movements/Development
Consult a good doctor immediately as this should not be ignored as it will cause a big issue if you let it go now, please seek doctors advice on immediate basis.... - Aditi [View Message]
RE:Baby Movements/Development
Hi Karthik this is a serious issue and you should look into this matter very seriously as its concern with your own child and you cannot let things go, have a good consulting done by a good doctor.... - Amaira [View Message]
