Bowel and Bladder Movements:Hetal-does semi-solid green potty need treatment?
2006-10-06
Name: roopa
-My 4 month old baby passes stools once in 3-4 days.
- stools are quite solid (not hard though, little harder than semi-solid) and very very green. Initial lump is almost black in color!
- last lump of stool is normal - golden yellow and semi solid
- when she passes stool, bowel seems to clean completly
This is happening since a month almost. Her paediatrician says dont worry if the stools are not loose. It will get fine gradually.
Baby is fine otherwise througout the day, not uneasy. PAsses urine normally.
Baby feeds on
-mix feed : breast + bottle feed (Nan1 formula) - total 3-4 feeds in day
- apple juice + mausmi juice as 1 complete feed in a day
- daal ka pani as 1 complete feed in a day
Weight -
Birth weight-3.3 kg
Current weight = 5.8 kg
Not much weight gain in current month (only 200 gms).
Questions
- is there anything i need to do about the stools?
- is the weight gain fine? if not what shd i do?
Thanks
Roopa

its my message to sudipta paul, dates 15sept 2006,in feeding board..should answer all your fears about green stools.
see your dr at ne of the below signs :
1.less than 6 wet diapers a day, keep an account of it.
2.less than 1 bowel movement a day or after 4-5days ! in your case, 3-4 is ok or still acceptable.
3. Green colour stools in EXCLUSIVE bf babies is a warning sign that baby needs to see dr.and if the baby stools are nearly green or greenish and he has stopped gaining weight even though with enough feeds from your side,,it means he is getting too much of your foremilk and not the hindmilk...
4. consistent green stools is often the sign that your baby is sensitive to some foods that you are taking,or even it could be some medications that you are taking like iron supplements, antibiotics or ne multivitamins..
5.in case of bottle fed babies, greenish colour stools are perfectly normal..make sure it doesnt have ne mucous or reddish tinge in it...
also note that colour of stools varies acc to food the baby eats,,some babies have shown strong colours in bowels when foods like beets, spinach, berries were started (red, green or orange tinge),,all these will be around 6-7months onwards..,,unless otherwise normal stools are of yellowish/greenish to yellowish colour...
6. ne number of bowels more than a specific out of her schedule/routines is a matter of concern,,please share it with your dr, esp if more than 4bowels a day or more than that..
since her bowel seems to be clean i am not worried, also considering that your dr is fine with it,,m fine as well..your dr has seen your baby from day 1 and he knows your baby well !
with birthweiht 3.3,and current weight 5.8,,is just perfect :) keep it up...
introduce her weekly one fruit and one vegetable,,go slow as she is only 4months,,since you are giving juice, offer diluted juice(1:2/3/4water)//remember that your baby is 4months, earlier than standard recommendations to start solids and whenever baby starts with solids, intake of water has to be considered...
one of the reasons of initial lump being black is also less intake of water/liquids apart from formula or bm..
if you are giving fruit, for you offering boiled apple purree will be best to start with from next week...looking to your baby bowels timings.
i am fine as far as your baby is not getting tired after stools, doesnt cry during stools,,,seems to be fresh after stools,,feeds well,,,
a 4month is expected to eat/drink :
5–6 feedings of bm or on demand or 4-7oz of iron fortified formula.
Infant cereal:start with single grain,,rice cereal is the best to start at first,,,start with 1 tblsp and go upto 4tblsp of cereal by the time he accepts it and consider his preferences of consistency and amount accordingly..dont exceed more than 4tblsp..offer with bm or formula first with liquid consistency and take him to texture of paste in the next week,,if you see he is getting constipated, start him with boiled apple puree and replace bm/formula with that apple puree or apple juice made of apple puree(add in more water to boiled apple puree,,over boil apple in cooker,, with skin, strain it well, and give fine puree )
once a while more or less is ok,,dont try to complete ne formula or bm or solid feed,,,its not necessary for babies to complete feeds..
a seperate feed of Diluted Infant juice (1 :2/3/4 water ) : 2–4 ounces (1/4th to 1/2cup) from cup only or spoon only..
a good luck to you, no worries your baby is growing fine,,

This is not hetal.but i think i can suggest u something.
Right now ur baby is 4 months and u have mentioned tht u r feeding formula too,so obviously the stool will be a likely grren color stool and regarding the consistency, aslong as its not watery u have nothing to worry abt.
after the baby reached 7 or 8 months the color will also change to slight yellow.but as long as u feed formula greenish color is very normal and thts becos ofthe abundant iron content in it.
the feeding schedule u r following is good but in addition to the fruit juice u can also try some fruit pastes.they r delicious for the babies and very healthy too.it helps to regulatethe baby's weight..
hope this helps

RE:Baby cries while passing urine - Hetal pls advice
At the same time the child is feeling some pain So try to understand and consult a doctor.... - sharmasanvi [View Message]
RE:bowel movement in 2 week old infant
Some babies go through phases when they either can't use the muscles to empty their bowels or they "forget how to". In that case, it's safest keep using the suppositories daily to make them do a dirty in 5 minutes.... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:where can I get laxative?
You can get either glycerin or bisacodyl suppositories in any Indian pharmacy - I recommend saving money by not buying child-size ones, instead cutting adult supps in half to make a child-size dosage.
(I have a daughter with long-term bowel issues: she can't "do" without them!)... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:constipation
When the baby is in discomfort from constipation (especially if she hasn't done some dirty for two days or more), the first thing you should give is a glycerin suppository.... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:hi
Most doctors say banana doesn't help - the potassium in it makes constipation worse. Remember you can make your own prune puree in a blender. Grape, grapefruit and papaya are also laxative fruits. And remember you can safely use baby suppositories as often as you need to (they also help with "training" the baby to do a dirty at the same time every day)... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:Baby Movements/Development
Consult a good doctor immediately as this should not be ignored as it will cause a big issue if you let it go now, please seek doctors advice on immediate basis.... - Aditi [View Message]
RE:Baby Movements/Development
Hi there please be calm and relax as it happens sometime the child takes little time to start walking or crawling also but in your case the child should have started crawling if not walking.... - Anita [View Message]
