Behavioural Problems:Nailbiting

My 5-year-old daughter is into nail biting. It's unhygienic and her fingers are getting quite untidy because of it. I've tried explaining, punishing anything and everything (I guess). If anyone could advice so that I can make her kick the habit, I'd like it.

dear anxious mom
nail biting in a child or adult is a sign of nervousness and anxiety. are you the type who worries whether you are doing every thing right and then get anxious and upset when you find that you are not ?
you may be passing your anxiety to your dauhter thru your words and behaviour and so she is taking to nail biting. here are some important tips-
dont punish. this causes more anxiety. dont scold or threaten her with un pleasant consequences.
just simply pull her hand gently away from her mouth when you see her nailbiting. and smile lovingly, give her a hug, play a game or take her for a horse back ride, or dress her up in your favourite saree. anything plesant to distract her attention and make her feel loved, comfortable, and secure. if you change your mindset from angry and frustrated to caring and loving then many more positive solutions will come into your own mind. try and see the magic.
