I read this news in yesterday's Times of India. This DIL sued her MIL for subjecting her to bullying and humiliation. She was awarded $65000 by the judge. This is the first case of this kind where DIL sued MIL under Protection of Harassment Act. I admire this girl for her guts. Read on ..

LONDON: In a landmark judgment, a British court has ordered a Non-Resident Indian woman to pay $65,000 as compensation to her daughter-in-law for subjecting her to bullying and humiliation.

Gina Satvir Singh, 26, told the Nottingham County Court that she was bullied, isolated and became seriously ill after the marriage.

She sued her former mother-in-law, Dalbir Kaur Bhakar, who imposed a 17-hour daily regime of housework, forced her to bleach her skin and cut her hair and restricted contact with her family.

Singh was forbidden to leave the house alone and was not allowed to listen to the radio, read newspapers or watch TV.

Her isolation was such that when she fled the marital home in March 2003, Singh knew nothing about Iraq invasion.

Singh sued her former mother-in-law under Protection of Harassment Act, claiming she suffered months of abuse following her wedding to Hardeep Bhakar in November 2002.

Passing the judgment on Monday, Timothy Scott, the recorder, said: \";The course of conduct towards Gina was not negligent, but deliberate.\";

RE:self centered inlaws
I agree they have completely double standards as I recently found out. I saw my husbands childhood photos when he was young. His parents claim they sacrificed everything for their kids and lived poor and behave like martyr parents. Got treated as free domestic servant. But the photos showed them dressed like Bollywood stars with watches and jewellery enjoying their life. O... - Tina [View Message]

RE:Mother-in-law spoiling my child
hello kajal,
if you are rudely talking with her, then this is not way to talking with your mother in law, you tell her in polite way, your son is her grand son, so she never think about his bad effects.... - ruchita [View Message]
RE:Mother-in-law spoiling my child
hello kajal,
stop your negative thinking towards your mother in law, she is your son grand mother too, so if she gave some sweet like sugar to him its just because of her love towards him.... - reshma [View Message]
