Role of in-laws:Irritating relative please help!
2005-12-29
Name: Sandy

thought I will share my experience and also seek advice from you.

We got married couple of years back. I have no complaints against my husband / his family. My husband is really nice and simple man and will do anything for my happiness. My husband is a software engineer, we had to move to USA because of his job. we want to stay heretill he finishes his project and go back. My problem is my cousin who is here. They came here about 10 years back and are citizens , have their own house and kids. But she is always more intrested about our private life. How much does my husband earn, where we eat, which car we have etc. She also insults my husband sometimes saying that her husband is a *** and where as my husband is just a BE. and so even if we want to settle its hard etc etc. And she also tells my relatives that we are very much intrested to settle here where as we are not!!! I know that her husband is not doing a great job by having a ***. Moreover she is always bothered about how much assets we have back in India, gold etc. Intially I thought she was just asking it out of concern (I am a little behind in judging such CHALU people) but now i realise that she is only jealous and she is also worried that we might settle in US. we do not have any plans of starting a family now. But she always keeps questioning me and commenting that we might have a baby here so that the kid will get a citizenship. I wonder how she has time to think all these!!!!!!!! Her husband just listens to her when she speaks all these crap but never says anything.

My husband is very nice,he doesn't like her but he never complians. He has a lot of respect in the family and is very helpfu.Iam extremely happy with him with what he earns and I dont care of which car we owns, how much bank balance he has etc. I feel its the understanding, love and happiness it counts.

I really what to shut her mouth but I dont know how. I dont call her often and also avoid her calls sometime . But we stay close and I dont feel nice to ignore her all the time. I dont want to have fight and spoil the relationship. Please advice as to how should I tackle with her stupid idiotic comments!!!!!!

I too meet such kinds of people and too dont feel like hurting them, bcoz when they start talking they feel we are not aware and they are bringing us to the conciousness of our surrounding. I too hate such people. What I do is make myself busy and not be available to them and slowly they too realise that we are busy and then things slow down.
All the best
Nancy

Hi Sandy,

I too faced similar problems when I landed in US. Some \";CHALU\"; people always taunted on citizenship for newborn kids, talk only if they needed info from us and were very unfriendly. Since she is ur cousin, you cannot avoid her, she might make some other comment about ur behaviour to ur relatives. So better maintain a diplomatic relationship with her.

How to deal with this?
I feel that my husbands parents are using their son. My husband is from India and I am from the USA. He obtained his greencard and citizenship through me after coming here. He is a physician and obtained his residency training. I worked to earn for our family for two years until he got his job. Then he applied for his parents to visit us on a visiting visa. RE:self centered inlaws
I agree they have completely double standards as I recently found out. I saw my husbands childhood photos when he was young. His parents claim they sacrificed everything for their kids and lived poor and behave like martyr parents. Got treated as free domestic servant. But the photos showed them dressed like Bollywood stars with watches and jewellery enjoying their life. O... - Tina [View Message]

RE:Mother-in-law spoiling my child
hello kajal,
if you are rudely talking with her, then this is not way to talking with your mother in law, you tell her in polite way, your son is her grand son, so she never think about his bad effects.... - ruchita [View Message]
