Role of in-laws:Greedy/Cheap in-laws
2005-11-08
Name: Dimple Anand

I have been married for 6 months. My in-laws organized the wedding in India since I live with my parents in US. When it came time for my parents to pay them for the wedding venue and the catering, they charged my parents twice the original amount. My parents are blindly trusted my in-laws and gave them whatever amount they asked for. But my in-laws took advantage of our trust. They did not even buy bridal outfits for me which I was supposed to get from them in my marriage. Now, when I confronted my hubby about his family's greedy actions, he and his parents blame my family for everything. I used to respect him and his family like my own. But, now I have lost trust in my husband because he lies to defend his family. I'm very sad that my marriage was turned into a business profit by his family. I feel soo unlucky to have been married into a greedy, cheap family.
My husband is still in India..waiting for his US spouse visa to be issued. I'm not sure, that I trust him enough to sponser him to the US because what his family did with us, he can do that with me when he comes here.
Please help me, am I feeling the wrong way about him?

Subject:  a common story

Hello Dimple,
This has become a common story in India nowadays. The boys parents ask the girls parents to arrange the marriage in their home town and saythat we will make all the arrangements for you and ask them to pay double or triple of what they actually spend and then also they will happily play the blame game. I am so much annoyed by such things happenning in india.. this is so bad.. earlier, baraat used to go to the girls house and so the girls parents used to treat them as guests and make all the arrangements at their cost.. now the boys parents dont want to spend for the baarat also.. so, they call all their guests to their house.. the girls parents travel to the boys house at their own expense and their also they have to pay for the guests.. why should this be so.. now they are the guests. the boys side should treat them as mehmaans are supposed to be treated. this will go on and on till all girls dont take a stand that they will not bear any kind of injustice.. because if they keep finding girls who are ready to bear it.. this is not going to end. we have to be strong ourselves to stop this. there is no other way i can see.

How to deal with this?
I feel that my husbands parents are using their son. My husband is from India and I am from the USA. He obtained his greencard and citizenship through me after coming here. He is a physician and obtained his residency training. I worked to earn for our family for two years until he got his job. Then he applied for his parents to visit us on a visiting visa. RE:self centered inlaws
I agree they have completely double standards as I recently found out. I saw my husbands childhood photos when he was young. His parents claim they sacrificed everything for their kids and lived poor and behave like martyr parents. Got treated as free domestic servant. But the photos showed them dressed like Bollywood stars with watches and jewellery enjoying their life. O... - Tina [View Message]

RE:Mother-in-law spoiling my child
hello kajal,
if you are rudely talking with her, then this is not way to talking with your mother in law, you tell her in polite way, your son is her grand son, so she never think about his bad effects.... - ruchita [View Message]
