Treating Rett's Syndrome

Treating Rett

Rett's syndrome is a debilitating disorder which affects girls. Holistic approach is the best way to treat Rett's syndrome. Alternative therapies give better results in treating Rett's syndrome.

Rett’s syndrome is a disorder of the nervous system which leads to developmental reversals, particularly in the areas of hand use and expressive language. Rett’s syndrome is a severe and rare form of autism which affects girls only. This disorder comes to light normally in the first two years of a child’s life. There is no cure for this type of autism. However, early intervention and treatment can help children cope with this disorder to some extent.

Tips for Treating Rett’s Syndrome

Here are some tips for coping and managing Rett’s Syndrome

Nutrition -

The first thing that parents of a child suffering from this syndrome must do it to seek the advice of a nutritionist. For such children a healthy diet capable of managing weight gain issues is preferable. Since muscle loss is one of the symptoms of this syndrome it is essential that the child has foods which help tone the muscles.

Physical Therapy -

To help the child gain control over her balance, movement skills and ensure shapely development of arms and legs physical therapy is beneficial. However, it is important to seek guidance from a qualified therapist while treating such children.

Motor Skill Therapy -

Motor skill therapists specialise in helping a child improve her communication skills. In certain extreme cases of Rett’s Syndrome a child may not speak at all. Motor skill therapist will assist both the child and the parents or caregivers in the art of communicating without speaking. Needless to say this skill will be very handy in the social development of the child also.

Therapy for Control Over Hand Movements -

Most children suffering from this syndrome normally have problems in coordinating their hand movements. In fact loss of hand movement or control over hands is quite common in these children. Therapy for the child to regain control over her hand movements is very useful to make her accomplish tasks with hands once again.

Surgery -

Surgery is often required in children who have spinal issues. In many cases it becomes a necessity to make a child use her legs and walk again.

Each family and every child suffering from this syndrome is different. Making friends with and staying in touch with other families facing the same problems can be of great help to the parents and caregivers. There is plenty of help available online too which can provide guidance and support to these families. Connecting with others can be a source of encouragement to the parents of a child suffering from this disorder.

Treating Rett’s syndrome requires a holistic approach. A team of specialists in medical care, physical, occupational and speech therapy will all be normally required to ensure all round development of a child. Unlike normal children, children with this disorder require help and support throughout their lives.

Alternative Treatments for Rett’s Syndrome

In addition to conventional treatment a number of alternative therapies are also used in treating children with Rett’s syndrome. Many of these therapies have been tried and found to be useful in improving the quality of a child’s life. Alternative therapies which can be used for treating Rett’s syndrome include:

  • Music therapy
  • Hydrotherapy- to improve body movement by swimming or moving in water
  • Chiropractic treatment
  • Myopfascial release- for loosening stiff muscles and joints this a very effective massage therapy
  • Yoga practices done under the guidance and supervision of an expert is beneficial to improve flexibility in such children
  • Horse riding and swimming with dolphins

To summarise treatment for the disorder is symptomatic. Managing its symptoms requires a holistic approach. One or more therapies may be required to be used in addition to medication to get relief from some of the symptoms of this condition.
