How to Prevent Suicide in Children?

Depression in children may give rise to suicidal tendencies. Therefore, parents should be alert and observe warning signs to prevent any unforeseen event. Read on to find tips for preventing suicide in children.

Suicide is a very sensitive issue. There are little children committing suicide today. When a child commits suicide everyone is affected. Friends, family members, neighbours and even those who do not know the child that well get affected. Everyone offers their grief and sorrow and wish they had taken a step earlier to prevent the life-shaking event.

Suicide is a result of depression. Today, young and innocent children suffer from depression which leads to suicide for many. Although child suicide is rare, it does take place. As depression creates a negative pattern in the behaviour of the child, they are easily prone to feelings of killing themselves.

Parents have to take special care of the child and monitor its behaviour. Children will not express their emotions like adults but will express it in their behaviour. Children having suicidal thoughts will express their suicidal tendencies to their near and dear ones in some or the other way. Hence, it is crucial for parents to know about their suicidal intentions and how to help them. If you feel your child is at risk for suicide, here is what you can do to prevent him or her from doing so.

Be Calm

The first thing you have to do is to remain very calm. Do not panic as it will not help the child in any way. Be calm and try to figure out the reason behind your child’s suicidal intentions.

Be Alert

Although suicide in your children is uncommon, it does happen. If you find any symptoms of suicide in your child, do not take it lightly; try to know the risky elements that could increase the chances of suicide in your child.

Talk to the Child about Suicide

Ask your child if he or she is thinking of suicide. Ask whether he or she plans to harm him or her or wishes to be dead. Give it a chance to address its feelings. Talking about suicide will not harm the child or encourage him or her but will give you a chance to know what they feel exactly.

Ask Questions

If your child talks about attempting suicide, ask him or her in a very casual and patient manner about how he or she would do it and when do they plan to do it or consider doing it. Ask them if there are any possible ways to do it like a cord, weapons, sleeping tablets, knife etc. Getting to know about such things will help you to take preventive steps.

Show Him that You Understand

It is very difficult for parents to accept the child’s negative behaviour and thoughts of suicide. In order to prevent the child’s such lethal actions; you have to behave in a very calm and understanding way. Try to listen to your child’s plan carefully, avoid getting panicky or scared. Let the child express his or her thoughts clearly and completely. The more specific the plan, higher is the risk of suicide.

Inform Others

Suicidal thoughts can be dangerous. If your child expresses suicidal behaviour, it is best to inform the school authorities and other family members and friends. This will help them keep a close eye on the child in your absence.

Call for Help

If your child exhibits very strong intentions of suicide, it is best to consult a professional psychiatrist or psychologist for help. Immediate treatment is important so do not wait.

Immediate action and good treatment could help your child extensively. Follow the above tips and help your child prevent suicidal actions and recover effectively.
