Harmful Effects of Being an Overprotective Parent

By being an overprotective parent, one can hamper the growth and development of children to a greater extent. Have a quick look at the harmful effects of being an overprotective parent.

Parents are there to protect their children but in most of the cases parents fail to realize that they are unable to draw a line between protection and over protection. Many a times, overprotective parents harm their children unintentionally. If parents get to know about the harmful effects of being overprotective they would surely avoid being so. Here are the reasons why one must avoid being an over protective parent:

Learning Inhibition

When parents become overprotective, the self learning process in the children gets inhibited. The children cannot learn how to handle different types of situations on their own. They know that they will get their parents whenever they are in trouble and will never learn to try out things on their own.

Decrease in Self Confidence

We adults gain self confidence by continuously working hard and mastering a particular task we need to accomplish. We must keep in mind that children also need to gain self confidence and they gain it the way adult do. If parents stop their children from struggling hard and try helping the kids in every step of their self learning path, it will do more damage than help.

When overprotective parents keep on intervening what their children are doing, children get the signal that their parents are not having faith in their kids’ capability. This will create a negative effect in the child’s psychology and will affect them when they grow up into adults.

Creating Negative Environment

When parents start protecting their children going beyond a certain limit to ensure their children have stress free life, it can actually create an opposite impact. Studies have revealed that those children who are getting over protection from their parents start suffering from anxiety disorders and they remain depressed most of the time. Such children do not enjoy lives and behave differently than other kids. Such children are unhappy at home as their parents are continuously trying to put everything in the right order for their children so that their children do not have to suffer. Parents must keep these things in mind and try to create a positive environment for their children so that they enjoy their lives.

Kids Fail to Identify their Limitations

When parents continuously keep protecting their children and help them to get out of tough situations, children fail to identify their limitations. Children may not be able to handle all types of situations and they are bound to fail in finding out right solutions in some cases but it is important for the children to find out the reasons of their failure.

Overprotective parents block the aspect of self growth. As they help their children during tough times and children do not face failure they fail to identify the reasons and further rectification of these mistakes is never done. Parents must remember that they are not going to remain by the side of their children forever.

Overprotection from Parents Can Be Disastrous

Overprotective parents must remember that their children need to learn to cope up with various types of situations without their parents. Children get confidence and they become competent only when they handle tough situations and parents are not always needed for handling such situations. Parents must also remember that every time their help may not be a real help for their children. Because of their help, their children may be deprived of trying things on their own and do not get the taste of hardship.

Overprotection for children may result in long term negative effects in the kids. Children who grow up in over protective environment are more like to be depressed, anxious and vulnerable due to their low self esteem and lack of confidence in coping up with various situations.
