Raising a Confident Child

Raising a Confident Child

Every parent wants to raise a happy and a confident child. Confident child can cope with any situation with an ease. Read on to find tips for raising a confident child.

Self-confidence in children develops as a result of sense of competence. In simple words children develop confidence not because of being told that they are good but because of what they achieve themselves. Irrespective of how small or big an achievement is it gives them a feeling of being in control. No doubt encouragement and praise from those around them, parents and teachers do boost their confidence. However, the sense of accomplishment which gives them a thrill is responsible for instilling confidence in children.

Children are constantly exposed to new things, events, people and a whole lot of everyday challenges which requires a confident attitude. Parents can instil confidence in children and equip them to face challenges better. It is important to understand that not all children are the same. Some may take longer than others to display a confident attitude. Here are some simple tips for parents to help build a child’s confidence:

Have Faith in Your Child

It is important for parents to have faith in their children. Children are influenced to a very large extent by the kind of beliefs their parents have about them. For example, if you believe that your child is a good reader and keeps mentioning it conversationally to the child and others this is bound to make an impact. The child too will start believing in her reading abilities and get confident about reading on her own.

Convey Your Faith to the Child

Parents must tell the child what they believe her special abilities are. It is important to reiterate to the children that they have abilities to do things on their own. Appreciation for a child’s efforts can go a long way in improving abilities. Rewarding a positive behaviour by a simple thank you can boost the self-esteem of a child and encourage her to engage more often in such behaviour.

Building Self-Esteem

Children under the age of four crave for attention of care givers. Here is a classic example of how parents can adversely impact the self-esteem of a child. Some children under the impression that they can attract attention by being naughty act aggressively. Needless to say this does attract attention.

Caregivers due to anger and frustration scold the child about his negative behaviour. This kind of feedback from parents, caregivers can deeply impact the self-esteem of a child. This is because a child’s opinion about herself is influenced to a large extent by what other’s opinion is about her. Hence, it is important for parents to act maturely and be calm under difficult circumstances. Parents must balance praise with criticism. They must pay attention to children whenever a situation demands.

Tips to Build Self-Esteem in Children

To help build a child's self-esteem parents must:

  • Appreciate and praise good behaviour.
  • Try to remain calm when a child behaves badly. Instead of shouting and scolding the child it is advisable to walk away from the scene briefly. Once the child calms down, parents must discuss about the child’s undesirable behaviour and its consequences.
  • Criticise the behaviour not the child personally since the latter approach can adversely impact the child’s self-esteem.

To raise a confident child it is important that parents do not impose things on her. If a child is not interested in attending a dance class, parents must not force her to do so. Parents must play a supportive role and accept the fact that each child is different. It is important for parents to recognise and let their child know that she is perfect just as she is without making comparisons of any sort.

Building self-confidence can begin very early. When babies learn to turn the pages of a book or toddlers learn to walk, they are getting the idea "I can do it!" With each new skill and milestone, kids can develop increasing confidence.

Kids who aren't confident don't realize their full potential. It takes confidence to be a kid. Whether going to a new school or stepping up to bat for the first time, kids face a lot of uncharted territory.
