Tips for Calculating Ovulation

Ovulation indicates the fertile period of the woman. Intercourse during this fertile phase leads to successful conception. Calculating the ovulation date is very important for planning pregnancy. There are different ways by which ovulating period can be calculated. Ovulation predictor kits also helps in predicting ovulation period. Read on to know more.

The ovule or the egg can be released by either of the two ovaries in the female. In order to calculate the fertile period, one needs to know the moment of ovulation. However, it is also important to keep in mind that the regularity of the individual’s menstrual cycle plays a significant role here.

If you desire pregnancy, it is best advised that sexual intercourse happens two to three days before the ovulation and also a day after the ovulation takes place. One must note that a sperm is alive for approximately 72 hours inside the uterus of the female; so the conception needs to take place within this period.

Therefore, calculating the ovulating period is very important. Generally, ovulating period is calculated by subtracting 15 days from the next menstrual date. This is of course when the menstrual cycle is the usual 28 days. If the cycle is of say 25 days, you need to subtract 10 to 13 days from the next menstrual period. Then again if the menstrual cycle is as long as 35 days for example, one needs to subtract 20 days from the next menstrual period.

Here are a Few Tips for Calculating Ovulation

Here are some simple methods for calculating ovulation.

The Ovulation Test -

The process of subtracting dates is a natural process of calculating the ovulation date in cases of normal cycles. But a lot of women, who are otherwise perfectly healthy, do not have a 28 day cycle. In such cases, the ovulation tests are considered to be the safest method to calculate the ovulation date. There are ovulation test kits that are available at the pharmacist and one can use them at their own convenience.

The Basal Body Temperature –

This is also a very simple method. It has been noted that the normal body temperature prior to ovulation is usually 97.7 degree F to 98.6 degree F. In this method, one needs to maintain a temperature chart where the temperature of the body must be recorded every morning from the day the last period is over. It will be noticed that the temperature reaches 32.9 degree F during the ovulation time. This indicates that the ovulation has actually occurred the day before.

One must make sure that the temperature is recorded with the same thermometer every day and at the same time. It is advisable to seek a special thermometer that is used to record the basal temperature from the pharmacist. Since they have their degrees engraved, they give a more accurate readings compared to the usual household thermometers.

Testing the Vaginal Discharge –

In this method of calculation ovulation, vaginal discharges during the entire menstrual cycle and if one keeps a keen eye, one can notice that the discharge varies in colour, texture and consistency during the menstrual cycle and also before and after that.

During the phase when the woman is not in her fertile period or she is not ovulating, the discharge is almost imperceptible; or there is no discharge at all. But when the discharge commences and has a dense consistency and is viscous, it entails that the woman is nearing her ovulation time. When the ovulation date is nearer, the discharge becomes clearer and less viscous and dense. This actually happens in order to aid the sperm reach the ovule easily. And then the discharge again turns sticky marking the end of the ovulation period and the fertile cycle.
