Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am 8 months pregnant. I have a lot of swelling in my legs, ankles, feet, hands and face. What should I do? I try to elevate my legs but it is not helping that much. What should I do?
Shama (Mumbai, India)

A: Please get yourself checked by your doctor because if there is anything going wrong, it can get detected in time. Cut down on salt, pickles & papads.

Q: I am seven months pregnant and my ankles have started swelling up. My doctor says that my child will be weak if my ankles continue swelling like this, and she has advised be to stop taking salt. She has also advised me to rest by keeping pillows under my feet. I want to exercise and also want to take walks. I have gained 4 kgs in my sixth month.
Kavya (Mumbai, India)

A: There is no harm in doing light exercises. However, cut down the salt and take lot of liquids. Get your BP checked regularly. Control your calorie intake as well.

Q: I am at 34 weeks pregnant. In less than three weeks, my BP increased from 100 over 60 to 120 over 70; my weight increased by 5 and a half pounds and my feet have started to swell. Are these signs of pre-eclampsia? My doctor says not to worry. But my weight gain was average and everything was going ok prior to this.
Manpreet (Chandigarh, India)

A: There is no cause for worry, but do be careful not to put on too much of weight.
