Q: I am a 16 year old male, I have a bad dandruff problem.. I used
to use head and shoulders, but after awhile it seemed like my problem
became worse. I then switched to using Selsun Blue medicated, and that
worked like a dream for some time, but now it just makes it worse. How
can I get rid of this problem? Adam (Mumbai,
) |
A: Is your hair dry or oily? Alternate Selsun with a regular mild shampoo, and use Selsun no more than once a week. |
Q: I have had dandruff for a long time but my hair fall started about four months back. I have tried various shampoos but it has only aggravated the problem. I also feel pain in the roots of my hair. what should I do??? Manuj (Punjab, India) |
A: Roots pain when the hair is dirty. How often do you wash your hair? Wash it at least a couple of times a week. Use an anti-dandruff shampoo once a week, or twice, depending on the severity of the dandruff. Also, change your shampoo frequently, and alternate shampoos to reduce build up. Oil and steam your hair once a week. |
Q: I'm having lots of dandruff from a year and a half. Because of that i'm
having pimples too. Washing my hair two times a week. Will u please help me to get rid of this thing? Madhu (Mumbai, India) |
A: Use Selsun medicated anti-dandruff shampoo. Also, try changing your conditioner, and wash your hair more often if you use hair products like gel, mousse etc. |
Q: Hi,
This is regarding the dandruff on my hair. On applying oil(gingely oil)
the dandruff increases. I always thought that its because of dry scalp and
oil was good. Few years back, i used to apply coconut oil but then switched to gingely oil, coz i heard its good.
I do get tensed and stressed for very small things. Is this also a cause. I live in the US and going to parlour is very expensive. Can u tell me as to how do i mange the upper lip problem. Also i have hair throughout mybody..Pls advice me Thank u in advance Anu (NY, USA) |
A: Dandruff is not always caused by a dry scalp, it can also be caused by an oily scalp. Use anti-dandruff shampoos regularly. Head and Shoulders is good, but if it doesn't work, switch to another. Also, using only one shampoo causes build-up, leading to dandruff, so keep two shampoos at home, and alternate between them. You should consider changing the conditioner you use, because at times certain conditioners cause dandruff. I will be doing an article this week on step-by-step to threading, which will show you how you can remove hair from your upperlip at home. So keep checking the site this week. Readymade waxing strips are available in various stores in the US, you can opt for them for hair removal. Also, scrub your legs with a pumice stone everyday in the shower, after applying soap. This helps retard hair growth, and remove in-growths caused by waxing. |
Q: Hi there! I'm a 15 yr old gal and I've got problems with my body for quite a while now. My 1st prob is dandruff. I'v tried two anti-dandruff shampoos {Head & Shoulders and Shikakai Herbal
Shampoo} and none of them seem to work on me. Ever since I was a child, I had to oil my hair before any hairwash. My hair was really short then so I always used to wash it everyday. I used to shampoo like once a month with Head & Shoulders. Now my hair is over shoulder-length so I can only wash it during the weekends. Most of my friends dont oil their hair and they dont seem to have dandruff problems. I also shampoo my hair once a week but my mom insists it's better I oil my hair instead. I'm really confused on what to do. I don't know what is right. I have lots of dandruff and it doesn't seem to be going, no matter what I do. Please help. My second problem is to do with facial hair. Where we live, there are only a few indian women who do all the beauty stuff and they have different opinions with the removal of facial hair. One of them said waxing is better because the hair growth rate gets slowed down and the hair that comes is very thin and fine. Another one says bleaching isn't a good option because it messes the face in the end and has other side-effects. One suggests electrolysis in india. I don't know which advice to listen to. I have hair growing as a moustache and beard and being the only one in my class that hasn't started on facials, bleaching etc, i feel very uncomfortable. My mom says i'm too young but now most people start doing this at an early age. Can you be able to suggest a safer and best way for the removal of this hair. My mom doesn't really know what to do either, so please help quickly. Ananya (New York, USA) |
A: Try using Selsun shampoo for your dandruff. Use it once a week, and wash your hair at least twice a week. Oil it once a week, leave the oil on for half an hour and shampoo off. I hope you don't leave the oil on all the time! You are 15 and you really must start removing facial hair. Waxing pulls facial skin and leads to premature wrinkles in the long run. Electrolysis is a good option but if the person is not very good, you may develop permanent scarring. I would not go for electrolysis in a small town. Laser therapy is a newer and better option. Thread the hair from your upper lip, eyebrows and chin - or pluck hair from the chin. Always thread eyebrows to give it a defined shape and bring out your eyes. Always thread upperlip too. Bleaching is not enough because blonde hair will be visible on your upperlip. You can wax your sideburns or bleach your face. Bleaching is fine, as long as you use a good bleach like Jolen, and apply it in the right proportion. You can even try to bleach your face at home, the instructions are in the packet. Bleach your face once a month, or once in two months, depending on when your hair turns black again. You don't need to start on facials now, but please start removing facial hair. |
Q: Hello,i am living in swiss. now i am pregnant.i've severe dandruff problem. even after hairwash dryflakes are coming. what shuld i do? Rose (New York, Swiss
) |
A: Some anti-dandruff shampoos work really well. Try Head and Shoulders. If it doesn't work, try a medicated dandruff shampoo like Selsun, which is very effective. Use Selsun just once a week, because it is strong. |
Q: Please suggest how to take care of my hubby hairs.they r dry having
dandruff, using dandraff sampoo it is no more now, but the hair started grying in more quatity.his age is 39 years .please guide me to take care of his hair and what to use for grey hairs as he is not in favour of using dye. Sharmila (Mumbai, India) |
A: The grey hair is not caused by using anti-dandruff shampoo. It is very normal for people to start greying by this age. Encourage your husband to eat more coconut and fish if he is non-veg. Also, he should have foods rich in Vitamin A, and may start B-Complex substitutes. Yoga will also help delay the greying process. |
Q: Hello, I am living in swiss. Now I am pregnant. I've severe dandruff problem. Even after hair wash dryflakes are coming. What Should I do? Rose (Mumbai, U. S. A.) |
A: Some anti-dandruff shampoos work really well. Try Head and Shoulders. If it doesn't work, try a medicated dandruff shampoo like Selsun, which is very effective. Use Selsun just once a week, because it is strong. |
Q: I stay in Germany with the water here me and my husband r getting lot of dandruff in our hair. We sue nyle shampoo(rita qand amla) but no use. Priya (Mumbai, Germany
) |
A: Dandruff could result from a dry, or an oily scalp. Try washing your hair with a medicated dandruff shampoo like Selsun. Or, use Head and Shoulders. If your scalp is dry, oil it once a week. |
Q: I have a lot of dandruff in my hair and my hair are falling rapidelly. There is a white layer on my scalp and when I put my nails on that then it comes out. Now I am using Neotrezena shampoo. And I wash twice a week. Please tell me how can I get rid of that (dandruff)????? Ritu (Mumbai, India) |
A: You need to wash your hair more regularly. Try washing it every alternate day with a mild shampoo or an anti-dandruff shampoo like Head and Shoulders, and once a week, use a medicated anti-dandruff shampoo like Selsun. Don't continue with the same shampoo for a long period of time as this encourages build-up. You should change your shampoo frequently. |
Q: I have had dandruff for the last few years. Every 3 days I wash my hair with Head & Shoulders but am not able to control the same. I am not exposed to dust at all but cannot control this...Any useful tips? Shiela (Mumbai, India) |
A: Apply curd to your hair, and rub it into your scalp before shampooing. Give your hair a final rinse with a mug of water, to which a tablespoon of white vinegar has been added. Another remedy that works well, is boiling neem leaves and applying the water to your scalp. Wash your hair twice a week with an anti-dandruff shampoo like Selsun, which is a medicated shampoo. Anti-dandruff shampoos tend to be a little harsh on the hair, so apply conditioner to your hair after shampooing. Certain conditioners also cause dandruff, so make sure you apply a conditioner that suits you. Alternatively, you could apply around 2-3 drops of oil on your hair, more for longer hair, after shampooing, when hair is still wet. Apply very little oil so it doesn't show when dry. You will not need to do this if you have oily hair. Use Selsun only until you still have dandruff, and after your problem has resolved, switch to a regular shampoo. All the best! |
Q: What should I do to get rid of dandruff? Vrishali (Mumbai, India) |
A: The best remedy for dandruff is to wash your hair twice a week with an anti-dandruff shampoo. Try Selsun, which is a medicated shampoo. It is highly effective. Anti-dandruff shampoos tend to be a little harsh on the hair, so make sure you apply oil to your hair at least once a week. Use Selsun only until you still have dandruff, and after your problem has resolved, switch to a regular shampoo, and use Selsun around once a month or less, to keep the dandruff under control. |
Q: Please suggest me something for acne, blemishes and dandruff. Sanaya (Mumbai, Mumbai
) |
A: Very often dandruff causes pimples. Wash your hair with an anti-dandruff shampoo twice a week. You could even wash your hair every alternate day or everyday - but then use a mild shampoo for daily wash instead of an anti-dandruff one. Oil your hair once a week, and wash off after an hour. Drink about 10-12 glasses of water in a day. Steer clear from chocolates, cashewnuts, soft drinks, wafers, non-veg and fried foods. Wind plays havoc with the skin. When travelling in a train, cab, bus or car, don't sit next to the window, or roll it up. Wash your face with a face wash twice a day. Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. |
Q: I have dandruff and my hair is falling heavily. What can I do? Gopi (Mumbai, Bangalore
) |
A: Wash your hair more regularly, at least twice a week. Try switching shampoos. Head and Shoulders is a pretty effective anti-dandruff shampoo for most people. Before washing hair, apply oil. Massage your scalp with hot oil for about 20 minutes, and leave it on for at least half an hour before washing off. Because of pollution etc, hair gets very dirty and needs to be washed at least twice a week, unless your hair is very dry and damaged. Plus, if you leave oil in the hair without washing it off, the oil absorbs more dirt, so always shampoo after applying oil. |
Q: I have dandruff since two weeks. I am losing a lot of hair. I oil my hair 3 a week and wash them 2 a week. Please suggest me a remedy for this problem. Latha (Pune, India) |

Q: I have a dandruff problem. What can I do? Vandana (Pune, Mumbai
) |
A: Get rid of dandruff with the help of an anti-dandruff shampoo. Try Head and Shoulders. Wash your hair often. If you have an oily scalp or live in a humid and hot climate, you could even wash it daily with a mild shampoo. Apply curd to your scalp once a week before washing your hair |
Q: I had thick hair earlier but now its become thin and oily with a lot of dandruff and it also looks flat. I stay in Kuwait. Please advice me what should I do to make my hair look thick and heavy. Heeena (Pune, Kuwait
) |
A: How often do you wash your hair? Perhaps you need to wash it more often. Condition it once a week. Use an anti-dandruff shampoo. Also, apply curd once a week or once in two weeks, about half an hour before washing hair. You could try hightlighting your hair. This will reduce oiliness and will give life to your hair. However, you need to maintain your hair well after a chemical treatment or you run the risk of damaging it. |
Q: I wash my hair and it still itches. Why does this happen! Kareena (Pune, New Jersy
) |
A: Hair itches either becuase of dandruff, dirt or lice. First, make sure you don't have lice. Second, how often do you wash your hair? If your hair is oily, you need to wash it every alternate day. In fact, if it is very oily, if you exercise, you could even shapoo daily. The weather that we live in, sweat, pollution, all need to be washed out of the hair. Use an anti-dandruff shampoo. |
Q: I have lots of dandruff in my hair which keeps increasing. What should I do to get rid of it and avoid hairfall? Mohan (Pune, Mexico
) |
A: It's very possible that the dandruff is causing skin irritation. Wash your hair more often, at least three times a week, with a mild anti-dandruff shampoo. Try Selsun, which is a medicated anti-dandruff shampoo, once a week, and use another shampoo the other two times. Massage your hair with warm oil once a week, leave it on for an hour, and shampoo off. You could also apply curd and egg in addition to oil. |
