 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have a 6 month year old baby boy. He had fair skin when he was born. His skin is getting darker. He has a "mongolian spot" on his lower back and also on his ankles and wrists. Is this a reason? Is it safe to apply lemon and cucumber to his body and face?

Rose (LA, )

A: There is no reason for the spots. Some children have them, just like some children have birthmarks. However, these spots often fade as the child grows older. By the time your child is 5 years old, the scar should have gone. If it doesn't go by the time your child is around 12 years old, the scar will likely be permanent. Avoid applying anything to your baby now. Let your baby be at least a year old, and then you can apply just cucumber juice. When he is around 2-3, you can start applying lemon juice to the Mongolian spots if they haven't faded. Don't worry too much at this stage, and don't think about the colour of his skin. Enjoy your baby.

Q: Query: i have brown spots (appearance of moles, but more protruding than a mole) on my face. Later it is seen on neck and now they have increased in numbers. Though they appear harmless, i am very much upset when i see this on my face, where i had a clear shiny face with no such things until before a year. I frequently started observing it on the mirror. I am also unsure of what is the reason (though i assume it is sunlight). I met a doctor sometime back, while he suggested laser. BUt i am not sure of its consequences and bad effects too. Please can the EXPERT here advice me or suggest me something to get rid of this (or atleast to reduce its comings). I am very upset.

Mola (LA, )

A: Laser is the best way to remove moles. It is good that you have visited a doctor since moles can be the symptoms of other problems. Since that is not the case, simply get them removed through laser.

Q: I am 21, and i have a brown spot on my face since childhood. It isn't a mole though. Creams haven't rid me of it. I'd like to know how to get rid of it without having to undergo clinical treatment.

Sony (Mumbai, India)

A: Sorry, but from what I can gather from the information supplied, I don't think you would be able to remove it without treatment. How large is this spot? If you want it removed, you should consider laser therapy. If it is small, ask yourself if it really bothers you that much. A small spot, like a beauty spot, can look very attractive.

Q: Hi, I am 24 yrs old and have a wheatish complexion. Over the past couple of months I have been noticing quite a few light brown (big) spots appearing on my face and over a period of time becoming darker and permanent. Could PLEASE advice me on how to get rid of these spots, they look so awful. I also want to achieve a natural glowing complexion. I eat pretty healthy food and do exercises but still am not able to achieve that glow in my face that I always wanted. Please help me! Thanks.

Ana (Mumbai, India)

A: These spots could be freckles, and are often caused by sun exposure. Make sure you wear sunscreen daily, and wear a hat if possible when in the sun. For getting the glow on your face, continue regular exercise. Wake up early morning, stick to regular timings, eat a balanced meal and make sure you drink at least 10 to 12 glasses of water every day. Take up yoga and eat more fruit. Try and avoid tea, coffee and soft drinks as far as possible.

Q: Please can you tell me what is the best way to get rid of brown spot on the cheeks I am using lime and honey at the moment but it is not working- what is a quick effective solution.

Yasmin (Goa, UAE )

A: Are you talking about freckles? These brown spots are permanent and you cannot get rid of them. You do get creams that lighten freckles and help them fade, but such creams are not available in India. Freckles are caused mostly by sun exposure, so avoid going out in the sun.

Q: I've brown spots on my face. Is there any home remedy for it?

Raj (Mumbai, India)

A: Freckles are a form of pigmenation, normally caused by exposure to the sun. Avoid going out in the sun, and make sure you wear a sunscreen every morning, even if you are indoors (you can wear a low-SPF sunscreen, or a moisturiser with an in-built sunscreen). Drink plenty of water to detox your system. Try going on a fruit fast once a week. Substitute one or both meals with fruit. Use a face scrub once a week. Apply a mixture of lime and honey on your face, and wash off after ten minutes. Do this everyday.

Q: I have got a brown spot near my eye. Any remedy? Are hair removing machines safe for removing hair from arms & legs? Will they increase hair growth?

Krishna (Surat, India)

A: Epilators like Silk Epil from Braun remove hair from the root, and so they are similar to waxing, as waxing also removes hair from the root. However, you may get more in-growths if you use these machines, so you should scrub your body with a pumice stone while bathing to counter this problem. You need to give more details about the brown spot. Is it a freckle or is it a mole? How big is the spot? If it is a mole, you should visit a dermatologist.
