Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have bajra porridge everyday, and have been told that it is good for lactating. Is bajra gassy? My son has a severe gas problem.
Avantika (Calcutta, India)

A: Your food has no relation to the child’s gas formation.

Q: Can a nursing mother smoke or consume alcohol?
Piya (Atlanta, USA)

A: A nursing mother should not smoke or drink alcohol. It is dangerous for the baby’s health.

Q: I am a lactating mother. What diet should I follow to avoid being anaemic, keeping in mind that I do not want to overeat!
Joyana (Dubai, UAE)

A: Take iron and calcium. Include methi [fenugreek], spinach and green vegetables in your diet. Drink plenty of milk. Have other things in moderate quantities and do not forget to exercise regularly. You will be fine – and so will your baby and mother-in-law!

Q: My baby has a gas problem. I am still breastfeeding him. What should I do? Is something wrong with my diet? What should I eat?
Janki (Forth Worth, USA)

A: There is no such thing as gas trouble for such small babies. You can go ahead and eat whatever you want.
