Spotting or Bleeding During Pregnancy

Spotting or Bleeding During Pregnancy

Have you observed spotting during your pregnancy? If yes, there is no need to panic. You need to immediately inform your doctor about it. Lots of women observe spotting during their pregnancy period. Read on to know more about the reason behind spotting during pregnancy.

Pregnancy period is full of anxiety, consciousness and apprehension. It seems a long wait when you are going to have the first glimpse of your child. You take care of yourself along with the health of your child and try to take all necessary precautions. But, sometimes even if you are extremely careful, some of you might find spotting during pregnancy.

Bleeding during early pregnancy is a sign of worry but at the same time it is a quite common problem too. However, this does not mean always that you will lose your baby. It is possible that with certain medication or sometime of bedrest, you will get back to normal life. Probably the doctor will get an ultrasound done so that the exact condition of the baby is known.

Causes of Spotting during Pregnancy

Have a quick look at the reasons behind spotting during pregnancy.

  • In the early pregnancy, sometimes when the fertilised egg implants, there can be slight bleeding for a day or two.
  • Sometimes when the placenta gets embedded in the uterine lining, there is spotting seen.
  • Pregnancy changes the entire internal system. Yet some variations are seen in the usual cycle. This causes bleeding. Softening of the cervix also causes bleeding.
  • Though rare, but when the embryo cannot develop or survive as there were abnormalities in the fertilised egg at the time of conception, there occurs bleeding.
  • Any kind of yeast or bacterial infection in the vagina can also cause bleeding during pregnancy.
  • Spotting is also experienced sometimes after intercourse.
  • Spotting during the last month or last days means you are ready for labour. Sometimes the process starts even with slight or no pain.

Difference Between Spotting and Bleeding

Spotting is light bleeding and you can compare it with the type of bleeding you experience during the start and end of your regular period. However, frequent and comparatively heavy flow of blood means bleeding which should be monitored carefully and should be reported to the doctor as soon as possible.

It is good to consult your doctor and get everything checked out specially when you bleed or see spots of blood during the early or mid days of pregnancy. Although, it might seem normal, it could be a symptom of some serious problem. If you are bleeding heavily or have intense pain, rush to the emergency room.

Dos and Don’ts

Here are the dos and don’ts for you if you observed spotting during pregnancy.

  • Wear a pad or panty lining so that you can monitor the amount and frequency of bleeding.
  • Do not insert anything like tampon or likewise in your vaginal area.
  • Avoid having sexual intercourse if you experience spotting during pregnancy.
  • See a doctor immediately if the condition is worsening or you are not able to handle the pain and discomfort.
