Diet During Ninth Month of Pregnancy

Ninth month is the final month of pregnancy when you are eagerly waiting for your baby. Find out what should be the diet during ninth month of pregnancy.

Now you have reached the final month of pregnancy and the wait for the little one is soon to be over. At this stage, you will be very excited and happy waiting for your baby eagerly. Diet plays a very important role during pregnancy. Here are some tips on what you can eat during your ninth month of pregnancy:

Extra Calories

You need to eat enough food and not keep yourself hungry. Even if you feel full very soon after starting a meal, you must eat and ensure that you are getting enough calories. Ensure that you get the calories from the right food sources, so eat a balanced and healthy diet. Eating healthy food supplies the right nutrients to your body for you and your baby.

Essential vitamins and nutrients can be supplied to your body by consuming a variety of healthy food items. As your baby is growing rapidly at this last stage, your caloric needs may get higher so eat the right food items. However, if you are not very active, then your caloric intake can be reduced. As you reach the later stages of pregnancy, your baby is growing and developing more rapidly, so it is suggested that you need additional calories in the last three months of pregnancy as compared to the first and second trimester.

Calcium and Iron Intake

Iron and calcium are important minerals required during pregnancy. Much of the bone formation takes place during the eighth and ninth month, hence intake of foods rich in calcium is important. Green and leafy vegetables are rich in iron as well as calcium. Iron is necessary for the formation of red blood cells in the mother and foetus. Walnuts, almonds, pulses, fish and breakfast cereals are some of the foods which are rich in iron.

Milk and milk products are good sources of calcium. Ragi is also a rich source of calcium and iron, hence it is good for pregnant and lactating women. Curd, cheese and cottage cheese are rich sources of calcium. As it is not possible for a pregnant mother to obtain all iron required from food alone, the doctor might prescribe iron supplements to be taken daily.

Add Protein to Your Diet

Include protein in your diet. During the ninth month of pregnancy you will be putting on weight, hence sufficient intake of protein and calories is essential. Protein is present in many foods, but certain items contain higher amount of protein than others. Soya nuggets, pulses, fish, eggs, vegetables, milk and milk products are all rich in protein hence you can eat these foods. Nuts like almonds, walnuts, cashew nuts, etc are all very good sources of protein. To add more protein to your diet, you can also prepare dishes with boiled kidney beans (rajma), and chick peas (kabuli chana).

Other Diet Advice for the Ninth Month of Pregnancy

Vitamin A and C

Eat foods that have high content of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes, cauliflower are all high in Vitamin C. Carrots, sweet potato, cantaloupe are foods that have high Vitamin A content.

Folic Acid

Eat foods that contain folic acid. Folic acid is an important nutrient for pregnant women as it helps to prevent birth defects. Broccoli, beetroots, corn, okra, and citrus foods are some of the foods which contain folic acid.

Food with Fibre Content

Include foods with high fibre content in your diet. Fruits, vegetables, cereals, grains, all contain fibre. Eating a high fibre diet has many health benefits during pregnancy.
