Weight Gain and Baby's Development (First Month of Pregnancy)

Weight Gain and Baby

In the initial weeks of pregnancy there is no noticeable change. Read on to know about the weight gain and baby’s development during the initial weeks of pregnancy.

How Much Weight Should I Have Gained by the End of this Month?

You should not have gained any weight this month, because the baby is still too little to require any extra nutrition.

In general, most women need to consume approximately an additional 300 calories per day during pregnancy. The exact amount of additional calories required by pregnant women is never the same for all and will largely depend upon their pre-pregnancy weight.

Women must gain the right amount of weight during pregnancy. If you put on too little weight your baby will be small. On the other hand excessive weight gain during pregnancy can result in the woman having an early baby or a large baby. Excess body weight can also lead to other related health issues like high blood pressure and diabetes.

To have an accurate estimate of how much weight you must gain during pregnancy you should be aware of what your Body Mass Index (BMI) before getting pregnant was. BMI is a measure of body fat based on your height and weight. Based on your BMI your doctor will be able to give you a fair idea of how much weight to gain during your pregnancy.

I Keep Throwing up, How Will my Baby get Nourished?

Morning sickness, fortunately, does not interfere with the nutrition that your baby receives. The baby lives off your energy and it is normally the mother who suffers. Therefore, it is important for you to eat the right foods and get plenty of rest.

Almost 3 out of every 4 pregnant women have to put up with morning sickness. It is quite normal and happens because of a sudden and drastic increase in the levels of HCG pregnancy hormone.

Throwing up is perfectly normal during pregnancy and is in fact an indication that your pregnancy is progressing as it should. This will not harm your unborn baby in any way.

If you keep a close watch you will be able to identify what triggers some of your vomiting bouts. It could be simple things like smell of petrol or even cigarette smoke. Once you identify these stay away from it to avoid throwing up.

You cannot completely avoid getting nauseated during pregnancy. If you feel that you are unable to retain any food that you consume, consult your doctor who will be able to assess your condition and offer suitable solutions.

How is my Baby Growing?

At this stage there is no obvious foetal activity. As the fertilised egg is so very small that there is no enlargement of the abdomen either. But do not worry, you are pregnant. Hard to imagine, but true.
