Food Allergies in Children

Food Allergies in Children

Dealing with food allergies in children is possible only after the allergy triggers are identified. What are the food items that cause food allergies? What is the severity of symptoms? Read on to know.
There are some particular food items that can cause food allergy in children. It has been found that over 90% of the food allergies occur from milk, eggs, soy, peanuts or tree nuts. Amongst others, fishes and shellfishes are prominent foods causing allergies in children. Let us discuss in brief some of these food items and their severity of symptoms in children:

Foods Causing Allergies in Children

Have a quick look at the foods causing allergies in children.

Milk -

Almost 2.5% of infants happen to be allergic to cow’s milk. Other kids react to other milk varieties like, buffalo, goat or sheep. The allergy is triggered by the contents of the milk like, casein and whey. Milk also contains lactose, which do not cause the allergy, but might be responsible for lactose intolerance. About 85% of the kids outgrow this milk allergy before their fifth year, but milk allergy poses the risk of the development of other associated food allergies along with nasal allergy. Most kids who are allergic to cow’s milk will also be allergic to beef as well.

Egg -

2.5% of kids are known to get allergy from eggs. They can be allergic to just the egg white, yolk or both. Most kids outgrow the allergy towards eggs by the age of five, but it can expose the kids to other allergies related to the nose and asthma. It is advisable to not administer the regular influenza vaccine to kids who are allergic to eggs.

Soy -

This is an uncommon allergy as just 0.3% of the kids are found to get affected by soy which is a legume. The resultant allergy does not cause life threatening symptoms or problems, and most kids outgrow this allergy at quite an young age. Kids who are initially allergic to milk are mostly found to be affected by soy as well.

Peanut -

Almost 0.6% kids are found to be allergic to peanuts and this might result in severe food allergy. It has the potential to cause a life-threatening impact and kids who are prone to asthma are found to be particularly allergic to peanuts. Just about 20% of the kids are found to outgrow this allergy when they grow up.

Tree Nuts -

This is quite uncommon, just about 0.5% of kids and adults suffer from this and it is less likely that the kids with this condition will outgrow it when they grow up. There is a high probability that the kid allergic to one type of tree nut will be allergic to other variants as well. Peanuts and tree nuts are not really related, but according to some dieticians, it is recommended to give the kid a nut free diet if he is allergic to one or any.

Wheat -

Wheat protein might cause immunologic reaction to not only kids but some adults as well. Most kids grow out of it quite soon. There has been no evidence to indicate that kids allergic to wheat will also be allergic to other cereals like rice, oats or barley. So it is best to conduct a skin test to ensure that the kid is not really allergic to any other cereals.

Seafood -

Kids allergic to seafood will be allergic to fish and shellfishes as well. The reactions of seafood allergy can be life threatening and very severe. It seldom happens that the kid outgrows this allergy and so this is carried into the adulthood too. If the kid is allergic to one type of shellfish he or she will be allergic to other types of shellfishes. So it is highly recommended that every type of shellfish is not included in their diet.

It is always advisable to administer a safe diet to the kid. Once you get to know that the kid is allergic to a particular food item, it is best to get the child diagnosed. And it is also best not to conduct any experiments with the said food item, like serving it in some other way or trying it out after a few weeks or months. Always follow the doctor’s advice in such matters.
