How to Tell Stories to Grandchildren

Grandchildren look forward to storytelling sessions of their grandparents. Find out how you can be a good story teller and enrich your grandchild with your life’s experiences.

The idea of telling stories to grandchildren is an interesting prospect for grandparents. They love to share their life’s experiences and several other fantasies with their grandchildren with great excitement. Story telling is an art and not something that people can do just like that. In fact you can become the darling of your grandchildren if you are a good story teller. All you need to keep in mind is that you must keep the interest alive and the subject matter should be of some use to the listener even if in an indirect manner.

There is an educational aspect that needs to be blended in storytelling and keeping the matter light hearted and delightful at the same time. Given below are certain aspects of successful and enjoyable storytelling to your grandchildren:

Illustration of Facts

Storytelling can be an illustration of things that are happening around you. You can construct your narratives based on simple facts like the growth of a flower, the joy in loving a pet or the excitement in building a dream model or the happiness of pursuing a dream. You will notice that things that are readily perceived are most enjoyable to the kids and receive the greatest attention.

Fantasies

Based on the above point you might think that how come kids are then so drawn towards fantasy tales like fairies, elves and dwarfs and angels. These are also areas of perception. The kids’ minds are highly imaginative. If you are able to flare it up further through your art of storytelling, your grandchild will be naturally inclined to relish it even more. Therefore, the trick lies in working with the kid’s mind and allowing it to spread its wings.

Keep the Drama Alive

The art of storytelling constitutes in the drama element. The purpose and significance lies in driving home a certain point. Drama is a means to do it successfully. It helps imagination to soar, draws attention due to the fact that it is exaggerated and yet it is close to reality, which actually helps the kid to relate to it and at the same time deviates the kid’s mind from the mundane reality around him. This is not paradoxical as both the qualities can reside side by side and fulfill the purpose. The kid obviously will not be fantasized with a narration that says the same thing that he is witnessing around him all the while, yet he will also want to hear something that is imaginative and simple and relevant enough to be considered as possible.

Create an Ambience

This is very important in storytelling. Set the mood with conversation, perhaps propping up the place a bit by perhaps setting up a bedside lamp or maybe adding or removing a few lamps from the room. These are simple things that add a lot to the effect of the story. Similarly, you can also decide to tell the story in a garden or a lakeside. Use your creative sense and experience and you can achieve great success as your grandchild’s favourite story teller.

Grandparents are great story tellers and with their experiences they have a treasure trove of stories. They are great in passing family stories. Interactive story sessions are much better as they help in developing good listening and oratory skills. Keeping the above pointers in mind, a simple story telling session can be a great learning experience or both the grandparents and the grandchildren.

Don't jz go by the regular ghost stories or fairy tale. Understand the mood of your grandchildren. Depending on it, create a protagonist who can conquer all evils. Give them the feeling that they are the protagonists.
