Most of the children do not show interest in studying on their own. Therefore, parents must follow some measures in order to help them develop love for studies. Read on to find some tips for motivating kids to study.Motivating kids to study in a world of distraction is the primary headache for modern parents. The average attention span has been decreasing and kids prefer to do anything but study. They are used to instant results and study does not come with that, and they are too small to understand the long term benefits. Therefore, it falls upon the parents to somehow motivate their kids to study, for their own welfare.
If you are a parent, who had tried to ban everything from video games to TV, but still your child is not motivated to study, this article is for you. In the following few points we will tell you some simple methods that will hopefully motivate your kid.
1. Habit of Reading
Some parents fail to see the necessity of reading fiction. Everything is a matter of habit. As early as possible you must introduce your child to the work of story-books, comics, fairytales, etc. These are completely unrelated to study so your kid will be interested in it. Once they start reading and genuinely enjoy it, they will develop this habit of actually sitting down and
reading. Regular reading of fiction, can calm your child. Next time you try to sit them down to study, they would not be impatient, they will at least read the textual material, take some interest. That is the first step to improve your child’s interest in their study material.
2. Stop Controlling
Most parents try to exercise a rigid control over their child, directing the way they should study, how many hours, what they should study, etc. This makes the child frustrated and distracts them as their
brain cannot process all that is being received by it. You need to stop thinking like an adult. Let your child be on the driver's seat, allow them the freedom to choose what they want to study. Motivate them but never force them, at this age it can be harmful. So if your child says they want to study an hour, let them, they will gradually develop.
3. Different Learning Styles
The bookish methods of rote
learning have been long discarded by experts. They recommend different, interactive ways of learning that make your child interested in their studies. Try to show them a movie, videos of science experiments or animals. There are so many educational apps available these days, introduce them to such apps instead of mobile games. A great method would be to ask them to teach their soft toys what they have learnt. This has been called the best way to learn.
4. Celebrate Achievements
Your child just came home after giving a small class test? Celebrate. At this stage, most children do not even complete tests, so if your child did you should congratulate and reward her. This will motivate her to
study hard and achieve more. If she has a favorite teacher ask her to wish the child or come down and celebrate. These things encourage children.
What matters is if your child is learning things and not how much they are scoring in
exams. At this stage, you cannot expect your child to always do well. There are parents who are permanently ruining their child by encouraging rote learning. Avoid that, instead ask your child what they are learning. Be enthusiastic, it will rub off on your child. It is a good idea if you ask them to teach you.
Learning for a child should be fun and joyful. Never push your child too hard or reprimand them for poor grades at this age. Be patient and try to motivate them with useful and fun ways.
