Exercises to Improve Your Child's Handwriting

Poor handwriting can create hurdles for child to score good marks and do well in exam. It can also create problems in academic as well as professional life of children. Therefore, focusing on handwriting improvement of a child is a must. Read on to know how.

As a child, have you ever faced complaints from teachers back in school regarding illegible handwriting? Then you know the perils of having a handwriting that no one can read, it gets you nowhere. Everywhere you go, you will have to hear people complaining about your handwriting, and most will even blatantly refuse to read what you have written!
In that case, you need to make sure that your child does not go through the same thing. Now it is a well known fact that infants have terrible handwriting; but even such children with can go on to have beautiful handwriting in the long run. How? These simple activities and tips can help you out.

Practice Makes Perfect!

Make sure your child practices writing regularly. No, that does not mean you have to force her to write every minute of every day, after all - all work and no play make children dull! Sit her down with a pencil and paper every evening and make her copy something from a book or magazine. You could also ask her to write down whatever she feels like.
By writing something that she came up with herself, she will be working on her writing skills indirectly! Good writing skills can be of immense help in school or later in life. A 30 minutes writing exercise can do wonders for your child's handwriting. You can give her coloured paper and bright coloured pens, to keep her interested.

Simple Motor Activities

If you are concerned about your child's handwriting, you can try out some simple motor activities which might help her out. There are little objects called pencil grips that you can use. It reduces stress on fingers, so that your handwriting is not affected. You can also make your child carry out some shoulder exercises, especially before writing. It will strengthen her muscles and loosen her hand muscles. That will not only increase her speed of writing but also improve her handwriting.

Puzzles and Games

There are a lot of factors that determine handwriting- for example, coordination, posture, how you hold the pen, control and dexterity. Most of these can be corrected by simple puzzles and games. These games will hone their motor skills, enabling them to to write better. Solving these puzzles or mazes will enhance the child's cognitive abilities. It will allow her to think on the go, which is always a good quality. Your handwriting reflects your thought process. So if your child has clarity of thought that will be reflected on paper.

The Kind of Paper You Choose

More often than not, children face problems while writing on blank paper. Try getting lined paper instead. It will allow her to write properly, without diverting from the line. Make her write simple, small sentences over and over again. That will help her develop a knack for it, and then you can progress to the longer, more complicated sentences.

Exercise the Fingers With Playdough or Plasticine

You must have bought your child playdough or Plasticine play with. It is a very popular, and fun game, isn't it? And now, it can be used to for learning purposes too. Encourage them to play with it, to make different shapes - especially the complicated ones. That will get their fingers working and improve finger flexibility.
Also, activities that might have seemed pointless or useless at one point, like finger painting, following dot to dot pictures, tracing or colouring, are actually useful! They will allow your child to manipulate and control their fingers and hands. That will give them some control over their handwriting.
If you have noticed poor handwriting in your child, you need to take immediate steps to rectify it. Once your child grows older, it will be difficult to teach or change her handwriting- because she will already have developed a fixed writing style. Take necessary steps beforehand to avoid problems later on!

Very good tips. We need to encourage children to practice handwriting exercises right from early childhood.
