How is IQ Affected by Learning Difficulties?

IQ or Intelligence Quotient is a test of human intelligence. In this article we are going to find out the relation between IQ and learning difficulties.

There is always a reason to be happy if your child has a high IQ. Every parent wants to celebrate when they learn that their child has a high IQ. However, some children do not perform well in school even though they have a high IQ. A person with high IQ can also be affected by a learning disability.

Find Out the Connection between IQ and Learning Difficulties

Let us take a look at the connection between IQ and learning difficulties.

IQ and Children

Some parents focus too much on IQ levels which should not be the case. IQ tests are not hundred percent foolproof. There are children who are affected by learning disabilities which makes it difficult for them to properly do day-to-day activities. A child cannot do well in school when he or she is constantly having difficulty in reading, writing or doing math. Dyslexia and other learning difficulties can impact a child’s performance in school.

Learning Difficulties and Intelligence

As we all know, there are several people who have learning disabilities and yet they are intelligent. In fact, they are even successful after growing up. They are successful in their careers despite having learning difficulties. Thus, low IQ does not necessarily mean the child has a learning difficulty and it is true the other way round also. A learning disability does not necessarily mean low IQ. Thus, we cannot rely only on IQ to determine whether or not a child has a learning impairment.

Find out more about IQ tests and what they mean

Here is what you must know about the IQ tests and what they mean.
  • IQ score less than 20 – Profound learning difficulty
  • IQ score between 20 and 34 - Severe learning disability
  • IQ between 35 and 49 – Moderate learning difficulty
  • IQ between 50 and 70 – Mild learning disability

What Evidence Shows?

General signs of learning disability include difficulties in reading, writing, doing math, etc. Yes, that is true. Children with learning disabilities struggle a lot. Even if you ask a simple question, they may not be able to answer. They need extra attention, care and effort from the teacher.
You can conduct an IQ test to determine if your child has a learning disability. However, a low IQ score does not mean that your child will be unable to read well. Teachers need to have a passion for working with kids so they can identify whether or not a child has a learning difficulty. Thus, as parents you need not get stressed if your child has been diagnosed with low IQ.

Misconceptions about Learning Disabilities

Following are some of the misconceptions about learning disabilities.

Learning Disability Means Low IQ

Learning disabilities are not easily diagnosed. In fact, they are sometimes mistaken for some other problem. Just because your child is not intelligent it does mean that he or she is having a learning disability. Sometimes, there are other factors which contribute to a child’s poor performance in school.
Sometimes children do not perform well in school due to lack of motivation or no proper learning environment at home. Just because your child is doing not well in studies, do not rush to label him or her.

Learning Disabilities Can Go Away with Time

This is another big misconception which people have. Learning disabilities are usually life-long. If you think that your child with learning disability is just going through a temporary phase, then you are wrong. As a parent of a child with learning disability, you need to help him or her manage the disability properly and do well in life despite the odds.
There are people at high positions who have achieved their dreams despite learning difficulty. Thus, you and your family should not be discouraged at all.

IQ and IQ tests are not everything. A low score in IQ test is not the end of the world. Similarly, a learning disability is difficult to accept however it should hold back your son or daughter from trying to achieve their goals and dreams.
