Healthy diet is not about limitations or depriving yourself from your favourite food items. Rather, it will help you feel more energetic and also stabilize your mood. Read on to learn what healthy diet exactly means and how you can plan and stick to it.

If you find yourself confused on what a healthy diet is because of the conflicting nutrition and diet advices, you are not alone. You must have seen that if an expert tells you to have certain food item, another one will consider it exactly opposite. Some simple tips would help you to plan a healthy diet which can be tasty and varied and you can stick to it.

What is Healthy Diet?

A healthy diet includes foods from different food groups to get all the nutrients necessary for promoting good health. However, human nutrition is complex and so healthy diet varies widely according to age, genetic makeup, health as well as environment. When it comes to describing healthy and nutritious diet, balance is the key factor to get it right. This means eating a variety of food from different food groups in the right proportion. Just keep in mind that right amount of food consumption is equally important as right combination of food items.

Food Groups that Comprise of a Healthy Diet

It is advisable to include items from the four food groups to have a balanced and healthy diet. You must try to eat:
  • Plenty of fruits and vegetables
  • Balanced portion of starchy food like rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and others
  • Sources of protein other than dairy products like meat, fish, beans, eggs and others
  • Some amount of milk and other dairy products
  • Small amount of food that is high in fats or sugar
Try to bring variety by selecting food items from the above groups in your diet. Just keep in mind that it is important to have some fats and sugary food in your diet, but making it your main or only diet will cause problem.

Focus on How You Eat

Healthy diet is not just the food that you include in your diet plan. Maintaining good health means how you eat which means the way you look at your diet. Experts are of the opinion that when you eat your food you should slow down, enjoy your food and eat slowly. Take some time to chew your food and eat smaller meals throughout the day. You should have your dinner early so that you give a gap and rest to your digestive system daily especially when your body is not active.

Significance of Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are good source of vitamins and minerals and are considered as the foundation of balanced diet. They are dense in nutrients but low in calories. It is advisable to have fruits and vegetables in every meal and since different colours provide different benefits, try to add as much variety as possible.

Keep a Check

It is very important to keep a watch on your weight. Eat only what your body needs at present. Balance your diet with your lifestyle. Add fibrous food in your diet and try to reduce intake of salt, sugar and fat. Developing healthy eating habits is not confusing or restricting as many people think.
Get more whole grain and cut down on animal fat and trans fat as well. Also, keep a watch on calcium and vitamin D intake as they are very important for proper growth and maintenance of your body. It is always good to choose food over supplements. When choosing packed food, check the labels carefully.
