Throat and Mouth Problems in Kids

Throat and Mouth Problems in Kids

Throat and mouth problem in kids can become severe if not detected at an early stage. Know about some common throat and mouth problems in kids and how to deal with them.

Kids suffer from a great deal of throat and mouth problems during their early growth and development phase. It is unfortunate but true that often these problems are neglected by parents as the kids are unable to specifically express their problems. So more often than not, treatment commences only after the problem has attained quite a severe status. Apart from this, it can also be the case, that doctors are themselves unable to diagnose the primary cause behind those throat and mouth issues which are often also linked to the upper respiratory ailments.

Common Throat and Mouth Problems in Kids

Here are some of the common throat and mouth problems in kids:

Teething Problems

This is a natural part of the development stage of the toddlers, when they grow their teeth and simultaneously undergo a good deal of pain and eating problems. Usually, a few days or weeks prior to the visibility or the eruption of the tooth or teeth, the pain is felt. Although, this is a natural part of growing up, but the immense pain of the kid makes the parents panic.

There are other associated factors that follow this teething stage like, salivation. Then there can be symptoms of a cold such as chest congestion, and runny nose. The kid may also pull or tug his ear and mouth which indicates the pain he is suffering in his gums. Then in some kids, if the salivation is too acute, rashes can even appear in and around his mouth.

Sore Throat

Very often kids suffer from a sore throat which is mostly attributed to a viral infection. And the point to be noted is that antibiotics do not work much in such cases. But if the infection is caused by bacteria, antibiotics are prescribed by doctors and you can notice the effectiveness too.

The condition becomes a reason to worry when this sore throat is due to tonsillitis or pharyngitis that also brings along high fever. A numbing spray prescribed by the doctor might be helpful at this stage, but the condition reoccurs frequently, the doctor may suggest an adenoidectomy or a tonsillectomy. With the removal of tonsils the kid will see faster recovery.

Some kids develop a sore throat if they are very sensitive to environmental factors like high pollution levels and cigarette smoke or any other variety of allergens. Then if the kid has a habit of sleeping with his mouth open, his throat dries up with the repeated passing of air, and this can also give rise to throat pain.

Dysphagia

In this condition, the kid is unable to chew and swallow food properly. The tissues lining the mouth and throat get damaged and the kid is prone to choke while swallowing and even drinking some soup, milk or water. The doctor decides on what type of diet along with medication is appropriate for the kid at the given stage. It is mostly a restricted diet where the food is modified a lot before it is ready for the kid to consume.

Epiglottis

This condition is also known as supraglottis and has the potential to develop into a fatal infection of the throat. Here, the kid is simply incapacitated from accepting any foreign element through his windpipe; this includes all types of food. This infection is caused by bacteria, wherein the epiglottis swells up and the airway gets blocked. The condition first starts off just as a sore throat and gradually you will find that the kid is unable to eat or swallow anything. This is a time for immediate medical intervention.

Finally, it can be said that whatever symptom of pain or discomfort you notice in your child; you need to take it seriously. Keep a close watch on the kid and take note of the specific problems faced by him. Report them to the doctor at the earliest, so that the required medical examinations can be carried out without losing precious time.
