Pre-Teen's Growth and Development (10 Years, 10-Month-Old)

As your child lands into problems, she tries to solve them on her own during this stage. To know about the other growth and developments taking place in 10 years, 10-month-old child, read on.
Kids come across plenty of challenges through their growing up years. Resilience is what they need to navigate through such problems. It is important to choose the right solution to overcome tough times and unfamiliar situations.

Building Resilience at this Stage

A resilient kid can think of the solutions he or she needs to take when stepping into a problematic situation. Once he or she learns to cope with the difficult times, it helps building up confidence. However, you must not expect them to solve all problems alone. They do need your help every now and then. Even if they do not ask for it explicitly, you need to understand if they are in distress and need your guidance.
You need to keep in mind that resilience is not acquired by birth, it needs to be taught. According to experts, you actually make the mistake by trying to offer a comfortable life to children all the time. That is where the problems start from. Children should be made aware of small problems that can be solved easily. When you offer a comfortable life, they get used to it and take it for granted.

Disadvantage of Being Overprotective

Anxious parents specially tend to be overprotective about kids. For them it is intolerable to see their children going through the pain they experienced once. In this process, parents end up protecting kids from the worst case scenarios.
You as a parent need to teach them different problem solving skills and share with them valuable suggestions that would make them all the more resilient. You will only end up making them more anxious in trying times by being over protective.

Do Not Attempt to Remove all Hurdles

It is a natural instinct to keep your children safe. However, if you remove all obstacles and risk factors you hold them back from being resilient. There are instances of families not allowing children of this age to eat on their own for the fear of chocking. You are simply worrying too much and holding them from being an independent individual.
So, what you should do is, expose them to age appropriate risk factors. This will make them more careful; they shall develop their problem solving skills and become smarter too. You must also allow them freedom of limited amount, so that they learn to respect boundaries.

Help Them Learn Problem Solving Skills

If your child feels homesick after going camping to spend a night with his or friends outside, you can help him or her to effectively navigate his or her feelings. You can normalise his or her fears saying that he or she shall be fine in a group of friends.
Children are also guided by your feelings. If you appear nervous, it shall get transmitted to your kids as well. Children also tend to feel nervous about their first exam. You can help them figure out different brainstorming strategies that hall help manage their tasks and time.

Teach Concrete Skills

If you find them developing interest in a particular activity or task, encourage them to focus on that. This shall help them understand difficult times well. Once they imbibe concrete skills they shall be able to utilise them in other works of life as well.

Avoid the “Why”

Asking “why” may not always help solving a problem. Rather than asking them why they left their cycle in the rain, you can ask about how they have thought to repair the rusts. This might prompt them to discuss with their friends or look online for a possible solution.
Rather than offering easy solutions to all problems, your aim must be to help them think of all possibilities. These can be some effective ways to make them more resilient. This constitutes a very important part of their growth and development.
