Importance of a Schedule
Karisma Kapoor is a firm believer in the fact that if a daily routine is established beforehand, it makes life easier not only for the mother but also the children. She prefers to set times for various activities of her children like walks, baths and meals. The routine extends not just for the children but for the entire household, including the staff. They are told what to do and when so that they do not idle around the kitchen and gossip.
Karisma thinks if the staffs completes their job quickly, it gives her more time to focus on her children. However, she is very particular about establishing boundaries and making rules for her kids. Before leaving for work every day, Karisma tells the help where her children are allowed to go, what they can use, what activities they cannot indulge in and who will be in charge if there is a crisis. The actress believes that all this helps to form improved channels of communication within the family.
Balancing Strictness with Softness
Unless she is present at home, Karisma’s kids are not permitted to watch
television. She is aware that most help take the easy route out by turning the television on so that the children can sit glued to it the entire day while they pass the time with their cell phones. The strict guidelines and rules she implements on her family is there so that people will follow them and things will progress in a methodical manner. However, her kids are aware that their mother loves them very much and always has their best interests at heart.
Honesty is the Best Policy
Karisma thinks that it is best for
single parents to tell their children the truth since older kids can be intuitive. According to her, India has progressed to an extent where the status of a
divorcee is no longer shocking. However, it is important that parents raise independent, positive, intelligent and
well-behaved kids. She warns parents not to overindulge their children. Do not try to compensate for the absence of a parental figure in the family since kids will understand.
Maintain Distinct Boundaries
Karisma advises never to befriend the children. She says that moms and dads should not suddenly go from parent mode to kid mode with their children. They are not going to confide in them about their marital problems and their
broken marriage so it is not necessary to become too chummy with them. They are just children; they will not be able to take sides and it is unfair to expect a kid to do so. Therefore, Karisma thinks it is okay to be friendly towards the children but not good for parents to lower themselves to the level of the children.
Karisma thinks that taking children to the workplace can be good since it will show them what their mother does exactly. Although, she has a life beyond the silver screen, Karisma wants her kids to know about her career since films have been such a huge part for her life.
