How to Clean the Jewellery

How to Clean the Jewellery

It is very important to keep your jewelry clean to preserve it for a longer time. You need to clean your jewelry in right manner. There are few ways which can help you to clean your jewelry properly. Read on to know more about keeping your jewelry clean.

Jewelry must be cleaned in order to prevent the buildup of dirt and prevent it from becoming tarnished. The original packaging or the jewelry box must be retained for this purpose. Most of the jewelry pieces can be cleaned in a mix of warm water and mild soap with a soft bristle toothbrush or soft piece of cloth. It should be a non-abrasive silver cloth or a soft lint free cloth.

Ultrasonic Cleaning for Jewellery

Ultrasonic cleaning procedures have evolved that can effectively remove the tarnishes. Ultrasonic waves and chemicals are combined to build bubbles. They then ‘cling’ to the foreign particles like dust, oil or any other unknown substances. High frequency waves are then used to pull the contaminants from the surface of the jewelry. You can see the bubbles collapsing after they attach to the contaminants and then move upwards towards the surface of the chemical solution that appears to be a boiling one.

Some Precautions while Cleaning Jewellery

There are certain aspects that you need to take care in this regard. Various types of jewelry settings can obstruction in your cleaning efforts. Diamond jewelry is the best example here. Jewelers advise the use of sudsy ammonia cleaning kits. Ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaners are good examples. If you are cleaning your jewelry piece at home, you can immerse your diamond set in ammonia based or ethyl alcohol based solutions or in a solution of warm water and mild grease dissolving detergent.

Ingredients for Cleaning Jewellery

A combination of aluminum foil, baking soda and hot water can be used to clean silver jewelry pieces. Stone sets require extra care while cleaning. Some stones are coated with dark pigments to reduce their shininess. Then you will find an overlay on stones like white topaz to produce the effect of certain colours. If you opt for ultrasonic cleaning for these jewelries, this coating might get removed. Jewelry containing pearl, amber and opals or any other gemstones that are porous should not be cleaned using ultrasonic waves and chemicals.

Cleaning Silver Jewellery

Silver tends to develop tarnish if left alone as it reacts with the sulphur in the air. They require frequent cleaning to preserve its natural luster. 18k gold jewelry also gets tarnished for the same reason. Sweat, soaps, cosmetic lotions, powders and perfumes are the main ingredients of the dirt that accumulate on the jewelry pieces. The gold and silver cleaners are adequately designed to do an effective job. A bit of gentle rubbing after immersing the jewelry piece in soapy water at home can be a good enough cleaner for gold pieces.

Some easy Cleaning Solutions

Toothpaste and lemon juice can also be effective cleaning agents. Soaking the gold jewelry in vinegar overnight can make it sparkling. You can also rub the gold and silver pieces with toilet tissues. Alternatively immerse them in boiling water with a little shampoo added to it.

A good homemade cleaning agent for silver jewelry is to allow the jewelry to stay in a jar of warm water mixed with salt and sodium bicarbonate along with aluminum foil. They should then be rubbed clean with a soft cloth and stored after drying properly in separate airtight plastic packets.

Cleaning Pearls

Pearls need to be individually rubbed with soft clean cotton cloth. This should be a moist cloth with a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Allow them to air-dry overnight before storing it in. whenever in doubt of a particular stone, the jeweler should be consulted.

do not wear gold jewelry in a swimming pool or hot tub or when using ammonia or cleaning bleach at home. Bleach, including chlorine, will attack and dissolve the metal. It's better to not wear gold jewelry in the shower either. The soap can leave a dull finish on the gold that is not easy to remove once it builds up.

To clean gold jewelry that does not include any soft gemstones, pearls or crystals, I put the gold jewelry into warm sudsy water containing a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid and rub gently with a cotton swab.
