Hi friends,
It's so funny to hear your stories and some are very inspiring. Here is mine
I belong to a middle class family even my in-laws are average middle class but my SIL (my husbands sister) has been married in a very affluent family and stays in India with her in-laws.
My parents are simple people and my in-laws look down on them, just because their son is working abroad and their daughter is married in a very well off family.
Whenever we go to India for vacation my MIL always insists that we should go and visit my SIL. Last year on my trip as usual my MIL asked us to visit her and gave us some presents for her daughter. So before packing the presents I told my MIL to see if they are of my SIL's standard. Because whenever I would take anything for her (SIL) she tries to see how much it's worth. Whether it's branded or not and if she doesn't like the stuff she would give it to her servants. When I told my MIL all this (although in a nice manner), to my surprise she took it otherwise and blamed me for spoiling the relationships and she said here daughter is a jewel and would never do such a thing and made a big issue out of it. I mentioned this to my hubby too, but you won't believe even he reacted in a negative manner and blamed me for filling his ears against his sister and mother. Well, I kept quite and thought only god is my witness.
Now, few days back I received a phone call from my MIL. To my surprise she addressed me as 'beta'. And she immediately asked for her son without much chit-chat with me. I gave the phone to my husband (I was sitting next to my hubby) and I heard my MIL sobbing and my hubby convincing her. She kept on saying something and my hubby was telling her don't worry everything will be alright. I was wondering what's going on.
After my MIL talked to my hubby she asked for me and again addressed me as beta and said these days dil's are better than own daughters and asked me to take good care. I was taken back and was thinking what made her so sweet and loving.
So the story goes this way: Few days back my SIL (hubby's sister) visited her parents (my in-laws) and as usual she got her own maid to take care of her baby (for changing diapers and other stuff as my in-laws don't have servants). So my MIL had bought a saree for her daughter. But my SIL went for shopping on her own and got some very expensive designer sarees. When my MIL enquired (as her nature is), my SIL said she just bought it to show it to her MIL because her MIL doesn't like cheap stuff and if she asks her that what has your mother given you she should have good things to show. My MIL was very pissed off with her attitude. Now she in her own detective ishtyle found that her daughter has given that sareer (which she bought for her) to her maid (as her maid had kept it in her bag). So friends my MIL was very much upset and told my hubby that no one gives her any importance even daughters are behaving this way in this world. And cried and cried for almost half an hour. And my hubby like a baby kept convincing her and to my utter surprise even cursing his sister. And I was shocked to see all this, as when I told my hubby that his sister does this to me he wouldn't just believe it but now when his mom is saying same thing about her he is getting so upset and swearing to teach her a lesson for such a behavior. Well bhagvan sabki sunta hai. As I was sitting next to my hubby, I was giggling in my heart at this mother-son-daughter drama. But I didn't say a word to my MIL and just said have faith everything will be alright!
So girls you should also have faith and don't worry if your MIL or SIL misbehaves it's a round world. Whatever you will do will return to you one time.
Take care and keep posting more stories

Hey There

Well here I am joining you in your laughter...
Do you know what my SIL does? When she visits her parents(my IL's), she brings them gifts but by the end of her visit is so overwhelmed by her own generosity, that she takes them back with her...HaHa....

Coming back to your anecdote...as you said, Tit for Tat...

Brought a smile to my face and made my day....:)

Here is my story,
I am from a small village in India and my Inlaws are from a city. Right from the beginong,my inlaws started giving me lectures about how to treat them and my husband. They told me that I should look at myself as a servant to my husband and his parents because they are the ones who are taking care of me. I flew to US about 2 months after my marriage and got pregnant right away. I went through hell -- I did not have any physical or moral support from anyone . My husband treated me like dirt. He always told me that I was nothing but a headache for him. On the day my son was born, I decided to change my life. I started reading books related to my education in the local library. I learnt to drive and acquired a driver's license. I took up a part-time job. Eventually, I became a well paid full time employee. I'm proud of my self now. My husband has also changed a lot. I can't wait to go back to India and show myself off to my jealous inlaws who did not even congratulate me when I got this job.
On my last visit, I went with my 8month old son and they did not hire a maid. I had to do all the work (that was my \";so called vacation\";). Not to mention all the mental torture they put me through. I visited for 6 months and was allowed to stay with my parents for 15 days. This time, I'm going to stay only with my parents.
This is my success story !

First of all I must congratulate you on your achievements. You are truly a very strong willed woman set her mind on doing something and achieved it.

I am also a firm believer that women should always keep educating themselves, upgrading themselves and always reach for the stars. It is an old saying "where there is a will there is a way!"

All the best with you holiday and I hope many women out there can learn from your experience.

Hi Anu
I read your story twice...it really touched my heart. You are the kind of lady we should all look upto. You had the courage to build your self-esteem from scratch. You showed everyone what you are capable of. You earned respect in everyone's eyes. The reason why your evil IL's never even acknowledged your success speaks volumes of their jealousy and insecurity. You did stuff which they could never have even dreamed of...
I am so glad that your 'success story' is still continuing. Last time when you went to india, you put up with loads of crap but this time, you have progressed to a stage where no one can mess with you!

We are proud of you and hats off to you!

Cheers!

hello all,
Immediately after marriage (I mean next day) my dearest MIL made the house maid services canceled and she told me that I am responsibile for all the house hold chores. The reason being she used to do all the things after she got married and fyi they were staying in one bedroom house at that time. My job included everyday morning sweeping and moping the 3 bedroom house and clean the front part of the house, put rangoli (being South Indian brahmin family which is compulsory) before going to office. I used to work in a software company and u folks can imagine the pressure on me. But I used to get up at 5.30 and silently used to do all the work before going to office. Ofcourse my MIL used to be behind me and pointing out that I had not cleaned below the cot or the dust is like that only blah blah. Believe me this continued for 3 weeks and my boss in the office saw that I was looking dull (imagine doing this household work from 5.30, finishing the office job, going back and completing some more jobs in the night like washing the utensils, cleaning kitchen and sleeping at 10.30) and he asked me what was the reason, thatz it I just bursted out and told him the condition. He was taken back and was shocked to listen to this. Well he said I have to do something abt this and I need not take this shit. So girls, u know what I did:
One fine day I just said I cannot do all the household chores in the morning that day without giving any reason. Well there were grunts, anger etc., etc., but I didnt care and believe me I did the same thing next 2 days. So 3rd day u dont believe, my husband started sweeping and moping assuming I will feel guilty and start doing but I was strong (not sure from which corner I got the strength) I didnt care. He did the next day also. Hurray, the next day I saw the servant lady present and doing all the things in the morning which I was doing!!!!
How is that ????

I really admire you for the self esteem you showed in yourself. This is a classic example of "People will take advantage of you if you let them"...

Way to go lady...you made us all proud :)

How to deal with this?
I feel that my husbands parents are using their son. My husband is from India and I am from the USA. He obtained his greencard and citizenship through me after coming here. He is a physician and obtained his residency training. I worked to earn for our family for two years until he got his job. Then he applied for his parents to visit us on a visiting visa. RE:self centered inlaws
I agree they have completely double standards as I recently found out. I saw my husbands childhood photos when he was young. His parents claim they sacrificed everything for their kids and lived poor and behave like martyr parents. Got treated as free domestic servant. But the photos showed them dressed like Bollywood stars with watches and jewellery enjoying their life. O... - Tina [View Message]
