Hi everyone - My son shiv who is 9 months and a week old. I have tried and wasted so much food but he doesn't take it very well. He seems to be moody. He is teething so I can understand why he doesn't want to eat solids but I'd expect him to eat a little bit. He turns his head away, doesn't open his mouth....anyway, I'm still trying to understand him.

What I was wondering about if there's a diet chart for a 9-12 month old. Also, please suggest me suggest me some indian receipes.

Thank you in adnvance.

some recipes ideas,,
check on indiaparenting diet section, nice recipes therein too.
also pref by other members.

good luck,,njoy yourself.expect lack of interest in foods and meals during teething,,soothe him with teething gels or teethng rings,,it will help...make the meals colourful with diff colours of vegies and fruits and make sure to play with textures and flavours,,offer diff varieties,,,
the links will provide you a month of recipes,,just check your baby age and go accdngly...
have fun !

Hi Rakhee

I am in the US too....

Well about ur queries:

- well plz do go ahead as per ur docs advice... yes U can soak it in dhal, or whatever u usually give ur kid... U can soak it in formula too..

- I am not sure of instant idly mix... plz do check with ur doc on that coz maybe some preservative ingredients might not suit ur baby.... try to start off with home made... coz u know what ur adding... and that what u add is fresh... U there is not harm to ur baby...

- Yes sugar salt is OK... maybe sugar u can go very lil... so that ur baby does not become a sweet tooth..later... U can substitute sugar with banana, dates etc.... mash it and mix it with food like idli and formula milk, with rice too... dates - u might have to check with ur doc before u start this... coz some kids r allergic to it.... if the doc says ok... then u can soak it in hot water overnight and then mash it and then add this pulp to any dish U give ur baby... U can do the same with raisins tooo

- Well as far as I know... jaggery, brown sugar is not advisable.... but am no doc.... plz do check with ur doc on this....

- If ur doc has asked to avoid citrus.. then I guess u better wait till ur baby is one year.... plz do follow ur baby'd doc .. coz he/she knows whats best for ur baby....

- cerelac is cereal for babies in India... its ok... I did not know where u live so I mentioned cerelac... but I guess u must be giving ur baby ... instant baby food... like the gerber baby food etc... just continue with it...

- yea... I guess u can go with gerber foods... but maybe U can keep it for times when u r tired, busy, going out etc... but otherwise when ur home try to give ur baby home prepared food... its very healthy....

- As of now... U can give ur baby veggies cooked and mashed also fruits....like carrot... cut it to small pieces... and cook it in lil water... then mash it with a lil of mased raisins, or salt based on ur baby's likes... and feed....ur can give mased potato with salt and pepper... etc... to make it lil liquid.. U can add a lil water or formula.... and feed it to ur baby....

Hope my advice/suggestions help U

Hi Rakhee

First of alll do not worry.... all moms go thru this at one stage or the other....

My advice to u r :

- Maybe ur son is not yet ready for solid food... try semi solid... or a lil liquid diet for some more days but inbetween keep trying to give him semi-solid and solid foods.... to check if he ready and if he like to try something new....

- If he does not like do not force him.... try to make eating an enjoyable thing for him.... if u keep forcing he will start hating eating time.... and will become a picky eater.... so if he does not like try to divert him attnetion and try to feed... if he still does not yet... respect he decision and continue with what he likes and try it after 2-3 weeks.... but do not give up ... be patient.....

- with regard to diet chart....

u can give him fruits - apple, banana, papaya.... and also what u usually give him....

- U can also give him Idly, dosa.... but soak it in milk and then mash it and add a lil sugar / banana and feed him..... u cna make it a lil liquid / or semi solid by adding more milk based on how ur son likes it....

- U can make rice dhal .... cook rice a lil more soffter for him.... and when u make dhal add a lil veggies like carrot, cauliflour, peas, potato, with salt, turmeric, a pinch of spice cook it.... and mash it and mix it with rice... and feed him...add more dhal for a liquid consistancy...

- u can give him cerelac, cereal... etc... baby biscuits, fruit bites....

- milk, u can give him kheer.... cook rice in milk and water and when it is very soft... for his taste... then mix a lil sugar, ghee and feed him... U can do this also with suji....

- give him apple juice.... orange juice...

- Plz note... when u r trying something new for ur baby.... try it one day and wait for a day or two and see how well ur baby's body has accepted the food... like check if he is still continuing to eat welll and if he is passing motion as usual and then continue..... ALso try a dish every two weeks and add it to his daily food chart.... do not try more than one new food dish on ur son....

- ALso take advice from ur baby's doc on the food chart... what to give and what to avoid.... coz not all babies r the same.... and what might suit for one baby it might not suit for the other baby... U as a mom and ur baby's doc r the only people who know whats best for ur baby.....

- It will take time for u to understand ur baby well....all moms do... so be patient... listen to ur baby.... and keep a watch on ur baby... coz he will express his uneasiness if he does not like something or if something is wrong... u will learn.. as time goes by....be confident.. and u decide whats best for ur baby.. along with ur baby's doc...

Hope my advice/suugestions help U...

Hi - Thanks for your kind feedback. All recipes sound delicious and hopefully he likes it.

From past couple of days, I think, I have been doing with him. He's actually eating Indian :)) I'm feeding him when he's playing with his toys. Before, I used to have him in my lap. Now, he opens his mouth wide open for food and I'm so happy.

Few questions::
- About Idli - My doc said not to give " regular" milk to baby so is it ok to soak it in formula (RTF)? Is it ok to soak it in dhal, kind of make it like idli-sambhar for him? would you suggest to use instant idli mix or from scracth? just curiuos...
- I also thought/read somewhere not to feed sugar/salt. Is it ok? I substitute sugar with jaggery?
- My doc said not to give anything citrus, probably til year. But is it ok to give him a slice of orange and OJ?
-Whats cerelac? where can I get it in US? (not sure where you reside so I'm being speicific)
- would you suggest to use gerber solid food? makes life easier but not sure if its healthy...

Thank you!
