Dear Hetal

I have a 2 month old baby. From the second week onwards he has been passing gas which has gradually increased to a great extent. Earlier i used to pat his back, massage, apply hing and it worked. since the start of second month i have been giving him colic aid(once a day) also bonnisan(once a day). he cries in his sleep also due to gas. (i have to pick him up and pat his back, he releases some gas and again goes off to sleep). Since the last 15 days i have been givng colic aid twice a day(7 drops in one go). Also the first month he used to have 10-12 bowel movements daily which gradually reduced to once a day then once every two days and now its once in 5 days.(the stool he passes is like a paste(not hard). he is breast fed on demand. Also i am giivng him one bottle daily at night. I burp him regularly.

what can i do to make him comfy. I have tried changing my diet. removed milk, cabbage, cauliflower and all sort of things that cause gas. I am taking ajwain, sauf ka panni also. What more can i do. pls suggest

(his weight gain is perfect)

Hi,
he is having gas, thn why was he given colic aid ? was he suffrng from colic ?
bonnison is still ok but why colic aid ?
colic aid is given to babies who have colic.colic is persistent, unexplained crying in healthy babies from 2weeks to 3-4months,,sometimes for some babies it goes on until 6months.
during colic, baby cries for more than 30mins nonstop and in during those, if you look at thr stomach, his belly looks swollen, hard and makes a rumbling sound.if your baby was having this problem, the causes is quite unknown as to why it often happens,,but is called infant colic.
the causes and symptoms of colic baby are immaturity of digestive tracts, hunger or overfeedings, food intolerance, feeling sep anxty at extrmly high levels which leads to emotional stress and agony of separatn,,certain type of formula, and bm offered more than warm temperatures and overstimulation or overexposure to too much noise, light, excited environments around the baby.
more about colic and how to soothe a colic baby is in post below :
http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=6873&table_name=dis_feeding

some other tips that might help :
1. give your baby enough exercises..cycle her legs when relaxed,,in circular motion,,whn she is lying on her back..between feeds... massage her stomach area,,esp the naval area,,around 3fingerwidths below her naval and with a firm but very gentle pressure, massage in circular motion at the count of 1,2,3.do it 4times only..not more. but do it often inbetween feedsgive her lots of tummy time, in between feeds,,relax her legs and hold them with your one hand,,slowly take it in direction of his head,,,while baby is sleeping on his back..it will help her relieve gas.

2. try to drink lots of fluids and lot of fibr in your diet,,esp spinach soup, prunejuice,,other green as a part of your diet,,if you are bf.

3. if you are bottle feeding, ask your dr if the formula type can be changed to lighter one,...also,,feed as often as needed,,

4. it is okay to give some water every 5-6hours like 1 tsp or so,,boil the water with some jeera pwder and ajwain seeds. strain it and make it plain water, offer that every 4-5hours,,see if it helps. dont try this for more than 5days ! or if the problem worsens in next 1-2-3days,,,

5. ahealthy 2month old is expected to drink as below in 24hours :
if on formula, :6–10 feedings of 2–4 ounces each or 6-8 bf session of full feeds in 24hourrs.see if he is on proper feeds,,his wght is okay so it seems he is gettng enough !

6.give him lots of tummy time between feedings or after 1hour of feeds, on hard surface(on ground or carpet by putting some 100% cotton cloth on ground/carpet)...

7. since you are giving one bottle daily,,check if this started when you started formula ! quite possible that iron fortified formula might not be the right choice for your baby.or may be milk solids/lactose is the culprit !

however, as far as his wght is perfect on the line,,i will wait to change the formula until 1 more month.as until 3months, most babies suffer from colic, gas, reflux,,and all of these are absolutely normal.
But, yes you are giving him bottle at night, he cries in his sleep and thats the only thing i see is causing him gas (which is quite normal or expected for formula fed babies esp those who are bf and formula fed)..
can you alternately change his formula feed to first part of day(before noon) instead of afternoons or night.... see if that helps !

8. feed your baby at semi upright position at around 45degree angle and see if that helps !
burping in vertical position or burping at every 1-2ozof formula or at every 10-15min during bf,,often reduces the gas as well as colic.
see if you can reduce the amt of formula PER FEED and INCREASE the number of feeds,,,which might help him deal with gas in much more smoother way !

9.placing a warm napkin on the gassy stomach will help ease the pain and baby will feel comfortable.

10. after he feeds and sleeps at night,,after 1-2hours of feeding,,see if making him sleep on his chest/stomach helps him release the gas,,be awake and stay next to him,,after 10-15mins,,make him sleep on his back or sideways..alternately.
give him a good wrap with a good 100% cotton cloth,,it helps sometimes.

11. see if changing the nipple of the bottle to slow flow nipple helps !

finally, last but not the least, ask your dr if your baby needs some gas medication(mostly Simethicone drops in US, the brand names are Mylicon or Ovol )

for the last thing i can imagine is continue offering massage as below,,esp the Iloveyou stroke before sleep :
http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=1936&table_name=dis_healthissues

all this should help,,if the baby gets hysterical or out of control during crying,,i strongly recmnd you to call your dr at once and make it a concern. upto 3months,,these probs are normal but the level of normal will be determined by you,,you know to what extent or severity your baby is sufferng or lemee say is able to handle it,,if you feel that its going too much,,its better to take a second opinion or get some other medication from your dr !

at 2months, thats all i can help you with..

if colic aid was the right medicne for your child, your child was expected to recover by now,,as its been 15days ! however,,let me add that you still have chances of his recovery,,by the time he is 3months old,,and if and only if its infant colic thn it should go by 3 or if longer,,say 4th month...

1.if your child seems to be uncomfortable with milk based formula///like you said needs help to pass gas even after changing the BRAND(NOT TYPE), thn you try switching him to SOY formula. see if that eases his life. a lil gas here and there is quite normal and its quite normal thru out the day as well,,mostly because until first 4-5months of thr life,,infants just lie on back and keep drinking the formula or let me say intake is higher compared to the activity level...and its quite normal to happen...

2.when you said bottle nipple is quite slow..i just want to make sure that its for infant 0-3 months flow ! since its difficult for me to judge the flow level...too much slow flow thru bottle leads to aggressive sucking of nipple, which might make him swallow more air thn milk ! where are you located chetna,,if you are in US, there are special bottles available in US,,its called Dr.Browns and it ensures proper flow of liquid without sucking air ! see if you can get those..
other thn that, like i said before,,most infants have gas probs until they learn to cruise around,,once they start to cruise and thr activity level starts to reach peak,,thr gas, colic,,stomach indigestion or reflux,,,colds, ear infections,,,all reduces ! unless ne other viral signs are seeen...which is again unlikely to happen for gas, colic, reflux.
infant colic starts often from 2 weeks to 3-4months..for some kids who digestives take a bit longer,,go upto 6months,,and for those who are more than that,,requires reflex or gerd tests...
as far as your dr is happy with your child wght(because he sees him physically and is able to examine him),,there are no specific bowel or bladder mvments,,like i said in bowel and bladder freq,,,keep n eye on them, whenever new things is introduced,,and in your case, i see only formula or your bm(diet) as a culprit..the other could b that your baby is just one of those 50% babies who take a bit more time in outgrowing this prob...hwver,,it only applies after your child completes 3months old..right now he is 2months old,,so you have still 1 month !!!!
also, you can offer water, once a day,,and see if it helps him to shorten the perriod of 5 days/bowel mvments,,,most bf and formula babies go upto 4-5days without bowels..but from your side, make sure that he is properly hydrated...they lose alot of water from pee, saliva, sweating,,almost 2-3times of normal adult body does,,and so even though some babies are exclusively bf or bottle fed,,they require a lil extra hydration by the means of water ! see if your baby is one of them !
whenever your child keeps pointing towards one particular organ,,make sure to check on the number of times he is doing it..for massge kids like to touch thr own body parts,,but for 2months,,see where exactly he is holding his tummy..and put your palm on that area and give a gentle pressure,,observe his responses and report it to your dr...let your dr do the same thing,,and allow your child to point to that organ if required massage him before the dr enters the visit room ! and dr will be able to judge it well,,as he sees baby doing it..
trying to hold shirt, pulling buttons and all is normal for 2months old..unless otherwise,,he is trying to remove it,,pull it off,,when he holds his shirt,,see if by removing the shirt and replacing it with some other tshirts,,stops him to do that !!!!
if so,thn may be he is not comfrtble with clothng or fittng,,,or that he not feeling good in that shirt..
most babies who are colicky feel bloaty whenever too much gas in rumbling inside the stomach,,and in that case,,they feel as if tied up with clothes ! like heavy feel..so they will do is try to removeit...
whenver he does, try giving him tummy time(not after the feeds,,,before the feeds or make sure a decent gap after feeds),,and see if he releases gas !!!!
might help..

thats all i see...

Dear hetal thanks for ur suggestions. The doctor gave him colic aid for fatulence(earlier his gassiness built arund eve and went off by night: now its all day long).
1) I have been giving him formula since he was 1 week old. started with lactogen..the doctor changed it to NAN 1, felt that gassiness increased due to it hence discontinued with NAN 1 and gave lactogen again. He cries in sleep during the day also not just at night. (i guess he needs help for passing gas).
2) i have been giving him tummy time also. i massage him twice a day and i religiously follow the i love u stroke and the other ways u had suggested to give massage. Along with that i make him cycle on his tummy as well. each massage is of 30 min approx. i put him on his tummy while he is sleeping also.(stay on guard).
3)His bottle nipple flow is quiet slow. his feeding schedule is arund 6 breast feeds of average 35-45 min each and one bottle feed of 4 ounces.
4) i myself feel very guilty for giving colic aid. I donot give it as a routine. But when his disomfort doesn't go away by massage, hing aplication ..i give it.

what i wanted to know is any idea as to how long will his gassiness be there? i was under the impression that it wuld be less by 2 months and no more by 3 months(whtever i have read).

secondly are his bowel movements ok...once in every 5 days??? another thing is that since the last one week he has been taking his left hand and trying to hold his shirt. during massage he holds his tummy. Can it hint at something wrong or is it normal baby movements?

pls let me know this. and once again thanks for gving such an elaborate and helpful reply to my queries.

thanks
chetana

At the same time the child is feeling some pain So try to understand and consult a doctor.... - sharmasanvi [View Message]
RE:bowel movement in 2 week old infant
Some babies go through phases when they either can't use the muscles to empty their bowels or they "forget how to". In that case, it's safest keep using the suppositories daily to make them do a dirty in 5 minutes.... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:where can I get laxative?
You can get either glycerin or bisacodyl suppositories in any Indian pharmacy - I recommend saving money by not buying child-size ones, instead cutting adult supps in half to make a child-size dosage.
(I have a daughter with long-term bowel issues: she can't "do" without them!)... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:constipation
When the baby is in discomfort from constipation (especially if she hasn't done some dirty for two days or more), the first thing you should give is a glycerin suppository.... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:hi
Most doctors say banana doesn't help - the potassium in it makes constipation worse. Remember you can make your own prune puree in a blender. Grape, grapefruit and papaya are also laxative fruits. And remember you can safely use baby suppositories as often as you need to (they also help with "training" the baby to do a dirty at the same time every day)... - Su 03 [View Message]
RE:Baby Movements/Development
Consult a good doctor immediately as this should not be ignored as it will cause a big issue if you let it go now, please seek doctors advice on immediate basis.... - Aditi [View Message]

Hi there please be calm and relax as it happens sometime the child takes little time to start walking or crawling also but in your case the child should have started crawling if not walking.... - Anita [View Message]
