(Rekha had post a query that her 7m baby is not accepting packet milk.)

I was not aware that it is not suggested to give packet milk to a baby before that age!

I have a 5.5 m baby and i hv been following his diet based on your suggestions to people.

As was suggested, i started suji kheer, rice kheer, oatmeal for my baby long back and he is also well settled with it. I m in india.

However, i cook these things in packet milk along with water (skimmed milk, usually 1 cup where half milk half water is used, add sugar and cardamom powder).

1)If not packet milk, how shd we cook these things?
(I did feel earlier that packet milk shd not b given, my MIL suggested cooking in plain water instead but the thought of having a kheer like that seemed wierd!)
2)Can we use formula in its place?
3)If yes, do we cook/boil the suji/whatever in formula milk like we do with normal milk?
4) i always felt that if formula is to be used in kheers, why not rather give just formula itself? Anyway we are giving one and the same thing...?

Please suggest.
Thanks in advance
pallavi

Hi...
like i said before, please read the posts with all lines.
if you are giving outside milk, make sure that the accptance comes from your child...like you have been givng suji kheer, ricekheer,,etc and your baby is settled with it ! so you have to go by the same thing...
not all kids are comfrtbly able to digest the proteins and fats of outside or let me say cows milk/ne other milk other than formula or breastmilk.
a lil goes a long way for them,,like cooking, and making kheer and such others,,but making it a whole and sole nutrition for your baby is not appropriate.
a baby until 10months atleast needs appproprte iron, and other nutrients or bm nutrnts present in formula or bm so it has to be its whole and sole nutrient.
however, because in India, we hv a culture that follows and its succsfully acceptd cows milk...if so, continung with cows milk or packet milk(ofcourse a trusted brand, or direct milk from cow but pasteurizd or atleast boiled and stored well),,is not a problem,,,,
now your ques...
cooking with cows milk is not a prob as far as your baby has accepted it,,but avoid making it a sole nutrition.unless otherwise your baby is on 100% nutrient diet !
1.you can cook in ordinary milk/packet milk/cows milk or ne milk that is available,,as far as YOUR CHILD HAS NOT SHOWN NE AVERSN TO IT OR IS COMFORTABLE WITH IT)...at first, the kheer you are givng is not doing ne good to him,,at 5.5 months,,your baby should be eating other good foods(i have always suggsted avoidng suju at 5months,,check my post,,so you are not following the diet i suggested ! ).
also, sugar is not required for your infant at this age ! i understand in our culture we give, but its not required...why you want to give something that is not required at this age !
give fruits, vegetables and other good things,,check my post to other people and you will know what all you can give at 5.5/6months..instead of kheers(only one type of food that has only 1-2nutrients) !!! once a while everything is acceptable but should not be a regular diet !

so that eliminates your pssbility of feeling wierd about cooking in water !!!!

check the diet for 5/5-6monthd diet plans,,,mentning so that there are other good things to give thn just kheer and upmas:

http://www.indiaparenting.com/boards/showmessage.cgi?messageid=6452&table_name=dis_feeding

other thing you can do is,,MAKE the formula like you make,
cook the kheer in water, and then when the kheer is at room temperature,,
mix the warm formula in it !!!!

SO,yes you can use formula in this way !
BOILING OF FORMULA IS NOT RECOMNDED,...even formula manufacturers dont recmnd it..some studies show that boiling formula temprs with existng nutrints chemical bonding and rather changes it to toxins..however the effcts of it are still under study,,but its not recmnded at all..sometimees the boiled formula throws out some stinking smell and it curdles,,which shows that it becomes inappropriate for consumptn...

so yes you can give formula in all foods that you make with milk,,you just have to make it diffrntly...

and when there are better alternatives available which ensures good growth and proper health of your baby and that you know it, you can afford it,,,,why you want to opt for the ones that might or might not be acceptable in certain terms !

play safe when it comes to baby,,and
always CHECK HIS ACCEPTANCE...

i hope it suffces...
good luck
